Sultan Mohammed Rumfa of Kano (1463-1499) was credited to have introduced into Hausaland the ‘#Ajami’, a modified form of Arabic alphabets used to write in non-Arabic languages. This coincided with the rise of Kano as a commercial hub on the central route of the Trans-Saharn Trade. This mode of writing originally spread in Sub-Saharan Africa between the 10th - 16th centuries with the spread of Islam and the Arabic language.
More recently than the earlier centuries, in Ghana, Ashanti kings, in their first contact with the white explorers/colonialists, had in their courts, educated Hausa migrants, mainly from Kano, as scribes to document the various agreements reached with the visitors using #Ajami, as no other local means of documenting these transactions existed locally as at that time. These historical documents still exist.
Author & researcher @dimabondarevs, of the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures, CSMC, of the University of Hamburg dated and documented some manuscripts as some the earliest use of Ajami in Borno and in Hausaland to over three-and-a-half and two-and-a-half centuries ago respectively. Rich literary works written in Hausa-Ajami existed in Hausaland long before the establishment of the Sokoto Caliphate in the early 19th century by Shehu Uthman Dan Fodio. During the establishment of caliphate itself, works by its leader, Dan Fodio, his children (Sultan Muhammad Bello and Nana-Asmau), his brother, Abdullahi Bin Fodio and many others, were originally written in or translated from Arabic into Hausa or Fulfulde using Ajami scripts. I and many have personally used Hausa-Ajami to write in both Hausa and English languages. So there is a documented history of over 500 years in the use of #Ajami in Nigeria leading up to my recent Hausa-Ajami Twitter/X posts.
Other African languages such as Swahili, Yoruba, Wolof, Kanuri, Afrikaans, Mandinka, Fulfulde and many others have been written in #Ajami to give knowledge and ideas a much wider reach and give the resulting discourse a more inclusive engagement. As a kid growing up in #Sokoto, I first read Dr Aliyu Namangi’s nine-volume beautiful work, ‘Wakar Infiraji’ in Hausa-Ajami as shown in the attached cover image. It is arguably the Hausa language answer to Geoffrey Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’, albeit being focussed more on individual salvation than on stories of a pilgrimage.
This deeply ingrained heritage and proud literary history of over five centuries was actively and systematically suppressed by the colonialists after the defeat of the Sokoto caliphate in 1904. It is time to reverse that and give Hausa-Ajami the pride of place it deserves in learning, scholarship and literature for the nearly one hundred million potential users in today’s Nigeria and West Africa to whom #Ajami is more than some unintelligible squiggly lines on a Naira note.
Deep in the heart of these users are literary worlds yet undiscovered, beautiful minds still unexplored, fantastical stories still untold, and groundbreaking ideas still unformed - all now distant because of an imposed barrier to self-expression in the form of writing style alien to them.
At a more practical level, state governments in northern Nigeria should use Hausa-Ajami to introduce formal vernacular-medium equal-access education to our teeming out-of-school children and close the vocational and artisanal skills gap in our young adults, something Prof. Idris Bugaje actively championed as head of the @NBTENigeria - in his ‘Skills not Degrees’ campaign. Both demographics would be more comfortable learning in Hausa-Ajami.
This is not only about history, diversity and cultural heritage but also about inclusivity, national orientation and national development.
As I join many Nigerians to thank the @NGRPresident, @officialABAT through the Ministry @NigEducation for taking the long-overdue step of re-introducing the teaching of History in our schools, I would call on our political leadership in #Arewa to please take a moment to consider the formal recognition, support and application of the use for Hausa-Ajami in all our schools and also in our daily interactions.
