Iris Album 2021 #flickr https://t.co/DGHD6sv6QQ photos of the irises in flower at IrisUmbria this year are now available in a Flickr album, below. I’ll also post a link to Google photos. Enjoy! Iris orders can be placed at https://t.co/SK1dFgZI12 #anirisaday
#Iris 'Beverly Sills'(Hager, 1979) is still one of the best pink tall bearded irises. #anirisaday #loveiris #Flowers #flowersfrom1970 #garden #gardening

For #anirisaday see below. The weather held today and we had lots of happy visitors. However our most unusual visitor today was this magnificent honey buzzard, a traveller from South of the Sahara, who sadly we had to get taken to a rescue centre as she's blind in one eye.

Today's iris is Ciel Gris sur Poilly (Cayeux, 2011). The subtlest and most beautifully nuanced grey on white with a touch of gold at the heart. Like the wing of a moth or the breast of a dove - exquisite.

So an extra treat for your Friday night #anirisaday - four beauties: the first is a mystery guest supplied to me as Daughter of Stars and firmly *not* that (answers on a postcard) and the others are Queen's Circle, Sparkles and Elizabethan Age.

Apologies for missing yesterday's #anirisaday tweet (a second will follow today). A hailstorm decimated every open flower. Here is Drake Carne before and after and the holes marble-sized hailstones punched through flowers. The weather gods have not been kind this year!

Wednesday’s #anirisaday is Jane Phillips (Graves, 1950). By iris standards that makes this a historic iris but it remains popular today for the particularly pure blue of the flowers, their elegant form and the fact it rapidly makes a good sized clump in the garden.

For today, I give you Sultan’s Palace (Schreiner, 1977). A maroon velvet skirt and a matching silk blouse. Classy. #anirisaday

I am playing catch up on #anirisaday so here is yesterday’s! Some think orange tricky in the garden but it is the complement of green and plays well with luscious dark purples, so don’t be scared. Be inspired by Cordoba, Golden Panther, Avalon Sunset and Robusto. Go on!

For #anirisaday today’s offering is Chelsea Bleu (Cayeux, 2004). Lots of modern irises combine light and dark blue but this one is exceptionally stylish, sending up lots of nice straight stems. And the orange beard provides a bright contrast even in the dull light we have today.

For #anirisaday here is Wench (Miller, 1991). The name is now not PC (I gather Disney has banned the word wench from Pirates of the Caribbean) but aim off for that because surely this is girl power personified in iris form.

Any colour, so long as it is white: the effect can be strikingly different according to which white iris you choose. Cliffs of Dover is a warm white, Frison Roche a cool, crisp white and Frost and Flame is enlivened with a bright orange beard. #anirisaday

For today’s #anirisaday I am giving you two to make the point there really is an iris out there for every taste. Flame Catcher (Valenzuela, 2013) a complex mix of colour washes on an extremely ruffled flower and Florentine (Cayeux, 1936)a study in chaste elegance - both lovely.

Today’s email is less #anirisaday than a day in the life. So, Her Royal Highness (a rebloomer, Byers 1989) and Rajah (Sturtevant, 1929) decided to get entangled and I had to separate the two whilst in flower. HRH is now recuperating in pots and we have flowers galore!

Sunday's iris is Festive Skirt (Hutchings 1973). Looks delicate but grows like a weed. The ones in these photos were planted only in late 2019, have had no irrigation, and have spent much of the past year swamped in weeds and yet they are making a decent show. #anirisaday

Here is English Cottage (Zurbrigg 1976) basking in the first sunshine all week. A sparkling white with a hint of lilac and delicate markings on the falls. Another reliable summer rebloomer. Would look lovely planted with Rosalie Figge, yesterday's #anirisaday

It’s been grey and cloudy here but Rosalie Figge is undaunted, providing a bit of drama as an early bloomer now but also reblooming like clockwork in the summer. A really brilliant garden plant. (McKnew 1993) #anirisaday

Now for some quiet elegance from a venerable lady: Susan Bliss. Exquisitely scented. As yet, living in our poly tunnel until I prepare the next field for planting out this autumn. Bliss, 1922. #anirisaday

Buckwheat - flowers early and long and then reliably reflowers in late summer/autumn. Byers 1988. #anirisaday

An Old Favorite: Afternoon Delight (Ernst, 1983). Such a distinctive color. ❤️ #AnIrisaDay

Dream Indigo is today’s iris. A moody blend of parchment washed with violet and deep purple velvet, with a bright blue beard. Intermediate. Amongst the earliest to flower here. Bartlett 1994. #anirisaday
