🟥 🌩 Anvil thunderhead (commonly called an anvil cloud or cumulonimbus incus) It is the distinctive, flat, spreading top of a mature or severe thunderstorm. ❤️ 🔁 #AnvilCloud #CumulonimbusIncus 🎞 @andrewwalsop9548 ▶️ It gets its name from its resemblance to a blacksmith’s anvil: a tall, towering cumulonimbus cloud with a broad, fibrous, and often striated “anvil” shape spreading out horizontally at the top. ▶️ Key visual and structural features: ▪️ Height: The cloud can extend from near the surface (base around 1–3 km) up to the tropopause (typically 10–18 km in the tropics/mid-latitudes, sometimes higher in severe storms). ▪️ Anvil shape: The upper portion spreads out laterally into a characteristic flat, wide, and often elongated shape, sometimes stretching hundreds of kilometers downwind. ▪️ Texture: The anvil is usually composed of ice crystals, giving it a smooth, fibrous, or cirrus-like appearance (cirriform). It often looks glossy or silky in sunlight. ▪️ Color: Bright white on the sunlit side, dark and ominous underneath where it shades the thunderstorm below. ▪️ Associated phenomena: Frequent lightning, mammatus pouches hanging underneath the anvil, strong turbulence for aircraft (clear air turbulence in the anvil), and vivid crepuscular rays when the sun shines through gaps. ▶️ How Anvil Thunderheads Form ▪️ Intense updrafts in a cumulonimbus: A powerful thunderstorm (cumulonimbus calvus → capillatus) develops when warm, moist air rises rapidly in an unstable atmosphere, often with strong wind shear. ▪️ Reaching the stable layer (tropopause): The updraft carries water droplets and ice crystals upward until it hits the very stable stratosphere or the tropopause, where temperature stops decreasing with height. The air can no longer rise easily. ▪️ Spreading out horizontally: Instead of penetrating higher, the cloud top is forced to spread laterally in the direction of the upper-level winds (usually away from the storm’s core). This creates the classic anvil shape. ▪️ Ice crystal composition: At these extreme altitudes (−40 °C to −70 °C), all water is frozen. Strong upper-level winds stretch the ice crystals into the long, feathery streaks typical of the anvil. ▪️ Overshooting top (optional but common in severe storms): In the most intense thunderstorms, the updraft momentarily punches above the anvil into the stratosphere, creating a dome or “bubble” before collapsing back and feeding more material into the spreading anvil. The anvil marks the mature-to-dissipating stage of the thunderstorm lifecycle and is a hallmark of severe weather potential (large hail, tornadoes, damaging winds).
