📣 New publication in @FrontiersIn - Nephrology 📖
We are pleased to share our new work:
'Beyond the test: patient-reported concerns and worries regarding kidney conditions and #APOL1 genetic testing among Black patients'
🧬Among 200 Black adults in the #StLouis APOL1 cohort study with completed 3-month follow-up, 17.5% had an APOL1 high-risk genotype (2 risk variants).
🔵 At baseline, concerns about kidney conditions were substantial, with 39% of participants reporting being extremely concerned. At 3 months, concern remained unchanged in 45%, decreased in 36%, and increased in 19%.
🔵 APOL1 high-risk genotypes were more common among participants whose kidney concerns increased compared with those whose concerns decreased (29% vs 11%; P = 0.02).
🔵 Worry specifically related to having an APOL1 high-risk genotype declined from 14% at baseline to 8% at 3 months.
These findings highlight the importance of understanding the patient experience alongside genetic risk and of developing patient-centered education, communication, and counseling around APOL1 genetic testing.

📣 Hot off the press (June 22)! 📖
🤲🏽 Honored to share the publication of findings from the ‘#LivingDonorExtended Time Outcomes’ (#LETO) Study, an ancillary study of the ‘#APOL1 Long-term Kidney Transplantation Outcomes’ (#APOLLO) Network Study:
“#Apolipoprotein L1 Gene Genotype and Kidney Outcomes After #LivingKidneyDonation”
🧬 Key finding: APOL1 genotype is a significant risk factor for reduced kidney function following living kidney donation. These results support #APOL1Genotyping for Black living kidney donor candidates in the U.S. to improve risk stratification and informed decision-making.

💫 As the @ATCMeeting (ATC) 2026 approaches, I am reflecting on the #WorldTransplantCongress2025 – including our session on ‘Ancestry-Specific Variation in the #ApolipoproteinL1 Gene (#APOL1) and #KidneyTransplant Outcomes’.
🎤 It was a privilege to join colleagues from across the transplant community to discuss the rapidly evolving science of APOL1 genetics and its implications for kidney transplantation. My presentation, ‘Exploring Solutions to Ethical Challenges of APOL1 Testing,’ was part of a broader conversation about how advances in genomics can inform donor evaluation, patient counseling, and clinical decision-making. 🤝🏽
The field continues to move forward, and we are excited to share new work at ATC 2026:
🌟 ‘Outcomes After #LivingKidneyDonation by Race and APOL1 Genotype: Results from the #LivingDonorExtendedTimeOutcomes (#LETO) Study’
🌟’Impact of Donor APOL1 Genotype on 15-Year Living Donor Kidney Transplant Graft and Patient Outcomes: Results from the Living Donor Extended Time (LETO) Study' (plenary)
🧬 We look forward to sharing progress in understanding the long-term impact of donor genetics on transplant outcomes. As #transplantation enters an era of precision medicine, studies such as LETO are helping to define how genomic information can be used to better understand risk, personalize care, and support informed decision-making for donors and recipients alike.
🤝🏽 Our team looks forward to engaging discussions with wonderful colleagues at ATC 2026 and to the continued advancement of genetics-driven approaches in transplantation. 💙💚 #Colleagues @CunningBeans | @MichelleJTx

📣 📖 Proud to share our latest publication in Frontiers-Medicine #Nephrology:
🧬’ #ApolipoproteinL1 (#APOL1) genetic testing, family history of hypertension, and kidney disease in a Midwestern U.S. cohort’
This study examined the intersection of #APOL1genetic risk, family history, and kidney health among Black adults participating in the #StLouisAPOL1 cohort study.
🔹 Among 220 participants who underwent APOL1 genotyping, we found that APOL1 high-risk genotypes were more common among individuals with a family history of hypertension and/or kidney disease, greater antihypertensive medication burden, lower kidney function, albuminuria, and early decline in eGFR.
🔹 Importantly, the findings highlight that genetic risk and family history provide overlapping—but not identical—information about kidney disease susceptibility. Together, these observations reinforce the need for integrated approaches that combine genetics, clinical assessment, and family history to improve kidney disease risk stratification and early identification of individuals at increased risk.
🌟 What makes this publication especially meaningful is the extraordinary collaboration behind it.
This work brought together investigators from SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Mid-America Transplant, UCSF Department of Medicine, Wake Forest University, and the multidisciplinary #StLouisAPOL1StudyCollaborators. The project reflects the collective efforts of nephrologists, genetic researchers, epidemiologists, biostatisticians, research nurses, and community partners committed to advancing kidney health equity.
