Laying down #archadvice for new students! Don’t be afraid to explore other opportunities outside your department. Archaeology is an intra & interdisciplinary science. There isn’t one way to be successful and it’s okay to build your own multifaceted approach!

And legacy collections are usually found in #museums. Talk to curators - there are often lots of great potential projects. Another reason #whymuseumsmatter #archadvice

Question your sources. What narratives are you perpetuating? Are they still sound? Are they normalizing colonialistic/western ideals? Are you actively searching for diverse voices? Your records & research have impact even as a student. #archadvice

@indyfromspace Undergrads should also take a modern language. Many PhD programmes require at least reading proficiency in one other language. French/German are the common choices, but certain regional specialties may require others. This was a regret of mine, wish I started earlier! #archadvice

#MyClassicsAdvice and #archadvice for students: do what you're interested in. You'll spend tons of time doing research on some small topic & not getting paid much, if any. Don't research something bc it'll make u look good. If you're interested that'll shine thru w/ good research

As we begin another academic year, something I think about a lot. People with high social capital understand that they get ahead because of who they know. They expect help. People from marginalized positions believe they have to do it all themselves or it's cheating.

My #archadvice for students/all: we might ‘study’ the past but we impact contemporary people. Listen. Learn. Collaborate. Participate. Be activists and allies. Be humble. And never lose track of job market - ensure you are developing necessary skills (digital literacy, etc)

#archadvice learn about site formation processes. To be able to dig a site, you need to understand how it came about. We all know archaeology is destructive, don't be that destructive archaeologist.

@indyfromspace #archadvice for undergrads: be aware that you are going to need reference letters from profs to get into grad school. Make sure your profs know you are interested in grad school and demonstrate your interest and abilities. Sometimes you need to get past the TAs.

A thought for those of you heading off to start grad school: You may feel the need to posture in front of your new colleagues to show how awesome you already are. Get over that impulse and find people with whom you can share feelings of how lost and overwhelmed you all will be.

I stayed sane (mostly) during my PhD with side projects & teaching but be careful to strike the right balance. You will not progress on your diss during teaching but it will help job apps (depending on your desired job) #archadvice

@indyfromspace Evening lectures, any lectures actually, are no waste of time but great opportunities to get close to current research and collagues. A lot! Don‘t be shy, don‘t hesitate to ask questions. And if only for possible participation for future field research. Make contact. #archadvice

Try to volunteer on as many different sites as possible, ask if you don't understand something and show that you are eager to learn! Join societies dedicated to areas you are interested in, I'm in @LtrPrehistFinds and @PrehistSociety and the advice is invaluable! #archadvice

#archadvice Volunteer! Join your local #archaeology society. It's a great way to meet local professionals (who may have a job for you!)

Love this idea. My #archadvice? Develop a technical specialism (materials analysis! Bioarch! Digging! — yes, that last one is something not *everyone* does well).
