📜 Guardians of Memory: Celebrating International Archives Day 2026
———————————————-
Every year on 9 June, the world observes International Archives Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the invaluable role archives play in preserving humanity’s documentary heritage, collective memory, and historical truth. The observance was established by the International Council on Archives in 2007, commemorating the founding of the ICA under the auspices of UNESCO on 9 June 1948. Since 2019, the celebration has expanded into International
#ArchivesWeek (8–12 June 2026), bringing together archivists, historians, researchers, governments, and cultural institutions worldwide.
Theme for 2026
“Archives for Justice: Rights, Memory & Futures” (#ArchivesForJustice)
The 2026 theme highlights how archives are much more than repositories of old records. They are powerful instruments for safeguarding human rights, promoting accountability, preserving collective memory, and supporting democratic societies. The theme emphasizes that access to authentic records helps societies learn from the past, address present challenges, and build a fairer future.
Why Archives Matter ———-
Archives: Preserve historical, cultural, and scientific records.
Support transparency, governance, and the rule of law.
Protect citizens’ rights through documented evidence.
Enable research, education, and innovation.
Safeguard collective memory for future generations.
In the digital age, archives are increasingly important as vast amounts of information are created electronically. #DigitalPreservation ensures that today’s records remain accessible and trustworthy tomorrow.
