My @Sunday_Post col. The #ArgyllCollection is a treasure trove of Scottish art orchestrated by author Naomi Mitchison for the children of the old Argyll County Council region. Still going strong, it’s the subject of a new exhibition @BurghHallDunoon courtesy of @CHARTArgyllIsle.

Follow @CHARTArgyllIsle for more on the #ArgyllCollection
#Reconnected project which is focused on this remarkable public collection.
Excitingly, next month Exhibition Trainee Lily Vaughan will open her exhibition, Awaken, at @BurghHallDunoon!

My first major article on African art in the #ArgyllCollection was recently published in #OxfordArtJournal. It seeks to tell the story of how one of the most interesting clusters of African modernist art in the UK came to Argyll and Bute.

This short piece was just published on @postatMoMA. 3 years ago, Dr George Kyeyeune helped me track the maker of this print in the #ArgyllCollection. Now in her 80s, Ugandan artist Catherine Gombe did not know her student work had ended up in Scotland. https://t.co/WuqwFTRPLq
Join us tomorrow to bid farewell to @univofstandrews #GlobalFellow Dr Angelo Kakande, who returns to Uganda on Sat! To end his month with us we'll be unwrapping 9 of the #ArgyllCollection artworks, recently arrived on loan to @ArtHistoryStA for the autumn semester.

Crossing the Clyde to #Dunoon on a perfect day. This week the first conservation investigations on the African artworks in the #ArgyllCollection will start. I'm thinking about Sam J. Ntiro, mailing his painting to this town from Dar Es Salaam in the 1960s.

#Tingatinga remains a v popular modern Tanzanian art practice. The #argyllcollection holds 2 historic works, from the first Tingatinga generation in the late '60s, bought in Dar by Naomi Mitchison for Scottish children to enjoy: https://t.co/ZywvP5iL4z

Had two lovely online meetings with Argyll primary school kids today to talk about Henry Tayali and Sam Ntiro, and Zambia and Tanzania. As part of the #ArgyllCollection's founding mission, these paintings are now hanging in their classrooms for them to discuss and enjoy.

For #ValentinesDay: Jak Katarikawe, from 'The Lovers' series [1960s-1980s], c. 1967, wax crayon on paper.
With gratitude to the Katarikawe family for new title information. #ArgyllCollection

The #ArgyllCollection research project has had some exciting developments recently with attributions, but this little print continues to evade us. It was likely produced by an art student at Makerere (in Kampala) in the mid-1960s...but who?

The print is the only one by a woman that Mitchison bought in E Africa. We can now exhibit it in #dartodunoon with a clear attribution. The extended info means that school pupils (the #argyllcollection's intended audience) can learn about Catherine and her work's specific story.
To end what has been a remarkable week of attributions for the #argyllcollection, I heard from the artist of this incredible print, 'Youth', about which we knew nothing. Prof George Kyeyeune at Makerere University connected us with the artist, Catherine Gombe (née Nankya).

I'm thrilled to say that today I received an email from Prof. Louis Mbughuni, who painted this #argyllcollection work 'The Fishermen' in 1964/5. The records were patchy, but @ArtHistoryStA alum Meredith Loper deciphered the signature and found a Tanzanian writer by that name.

Just heard from Rhodrick Tayali, son of Zambian artist Henry Tayali, confirming that this work in the #argyllcollection is by his father. Until 2018 it was attributed to 'Henry Tayaz' (signature misread). @ArtHistoryStA alum Elikem Logan first identified it as Tayali's work.

We can't wait for @tig_gallery's 'Paintings Are For People' exhibition featuring work from the Argyll Collection. A superb snapshot of #ScottishArt. Runs 28th April to 1st June. #argyllcollection https://t.co/VUvU1pAbf5
