Why Are These Advancements Important?
The goal of these components is to make the Polkadot Relay Chain more efficient and accessible, especially for DApp developers. Currently, developing directly on the Relay Chain without opting for or operating a parachain can be complex and time-consuming. By lowering the entry barriers, Polkadot 2.0 enables easier access to its ecosystem, akin to allowing a manufacturer to enter a market without having to build infrastructure first.
Enhancing Relay Chain Utilization
Asynchronous Backing
* Asynchronous Backing improves the speed at which parachain data is processed and included in Relay Chain blocks. Traditionally, the Relay Chain would bundle transactions into a block every 6 seconds, regardless of whether the block was full. If the block wasn’t ready in time, data would be left out.
* With Asynchronous Backing, if there’s unfinished data that can’t fit into the current block due to verification delays, it is placed in a waiting pool. Once verified, it is added to subsequent blocks until the block space is fully utilized. This method ensures that blocks are filled more effectively, increasing transaction throughput and network efficiency.
Agile Coretime
* Data processing on the Relay Chain involves multiple nodes. Previously, nodes were grouped and assigned to specific parachains. This led to inefficiencies, especially if certain parachains had lower activity, leaving nodes underutilized. Agile Coretime changes this by dynamically allocating computational resources (cores) based on current demands rather than fixed assignments.
* Nodes can now handle tasks from various sources without being dedicated to a specific parachain, optimizing resource use and improving overall processing capacity.
Elastic Scaling
Elastic Scaling acts as a scheduler between Asynchronous Backing and Agile Coretime. It dynamically adjusts resource allocation based on transaction volume. During peak times, it distributes tasks efficiently across available cores, while during low activity, it consolidates resources to maintain cost efficiency and optimal performance.
