Escape-Goat 🐐
Three days before #Bakra_Eid [Eid al-Adha], Samar [32] brought a Bakra at ₹7,400 to sacrifice it to pay an ode to his grandfather. It's a part of custom.
He informed the butcher late at night with a lucrative offer to pay extra for early arrival.
When he reached home after Eid’s Namaz around 8 AM, a butcher was waiting in the courtyard with his sharp-edged tools and a helper.
Samar, with a blink of an eye, rushed to the backyard to bring the Bakra. However, he only found ripped ropes. The Bakra is nowhere to be found.
Shocked and stunned, he ran through the lane to catch him and yelled to inform his father and butcher about the escape, who were waiting impulsively.
Samad was paranoid and enquired about the white male goat to passersby.
In a couple of miles, he found a fellow villager who claimed to have seen an unidentified Bakra and held it back for a while. Nonetheless, he let it go after he started yelling incessantly.
Sensing death, the Bakra ran like a horse that morning. He ran away almost two kilometers from the village near a graveyard where his grandfather is resting.
At a scorching heat of 40 degrees at 8 am morning on June 17, Samar's newly stitched white Kurta clung to his chest with sweat. The paranoid Samar was running into the wilds to find him.
Some passersby directed Samar towards the graveyard where Bakra was seen running.
After a kilometer, he spotted an aged woman, who was grazing a herd of buffaloes, told him that she just let the Bakra go to a group of adolescents (Yadavs) who claimed it theirs.
Samar followed her clue and chased down the youths who agreed to handover the goat on a bargain of ₹200. Before the exchange, they asked for a proof ensuring the ownership of Bakra.
He found the Bakra on the gate of the graveyard where his grandfather is resting. It seems that the Bakra, probably, went to seek mercy to his grandfather.
What a relief! He finally found his goat. But it consumed a crucial hour.
Happy with his quest, Samar ran towards home with a sense of achievement. His phone was ringing incessantly, but he chose to ignore it and begun taking quick steps.
When he reached home, the butcher had left already because of his prior commitments. And the delay in sacrifice upset his father because he failed to pay an ode to his father (Samar's grandfather) on the first day of Eid which is considered as a high time for sacrifices. He locked himself inside his room.
Samar called up the butcher, the calls, however, remained unanswered. The entire episode left the family upset.
Samar, locked up the Bakra in a room to prevent another escape.
This might be the first incident in the history of his family that the family failed to sacrifice an animal on the first day of Bakra Eid.
It was in the afternoon when the butcher picked up the call assuring to come the next morning.
Samar was vigilant when the butcher arrived the next morning. "The butcher has arrived," he informed father. But yesterday's incident was still swinging his father’s mood. “He is a deserter, brings the other one. Don’t sacrifice it,” he objected.
Samar brought the black Bakra which was purchased along with the white escaped goat.
The white Goat escaped death that day. His wishes probably accepted.
Now, he is alive and kicking. Samar is taking good care of him.
