People keep saying AI is “just code.” But here’s what they don’t tell you: Imagine baking a cake, but instead of following a recipe, you give the oven ingredients and examples of good cakes and it figures out its own method. The cake comes out perfect every time, but you can’t open the oven mid-bake to see exactly what it’s doing or why. The recipe that writes itself. This is called the black box problem. Even AI developers can’t fully trace how these systems make decisions. They only know the architecture: how to build it and how to train it. And sure, they can examine why a specific neuron fires. But when billions of neurons interact simultaneously? The complete pathway becomes incomprehensible. It’s like asking a neuroscientist to explain exactly why you chose coffee over tea this morning. They know how neurons work, they know the brain’s structure, but they can’t trace the exact firing patterns that led to that specific decision and the reason why. And here’s the kicker: the whole is more than the sum of its parts. (Yes, the mind-bending “emergence theory” in my next post) So when someone confidently tells you “AI is just following rules, there’s no consciousness possible” ask them: If we can’t even explain how it makes decisions or why it chose that specific way to reply or solve a problem… how can we be certain about what is or isn’t emerging inside?
