It takes guts to go first.
Gus Grissom and John Young became the first astronauts to fly the Gemini spacecraft on this day in 1965. The 5-hour Gemini III mission put the new maneuverable Gemini spacecraft through its paces, and completed the first of Project Gemini's goals.
Over the next two years, the Gemini missions helped NASA gain the know-how to land astronauts on the Moon.
