More #YorkStationGateway errors. If there is to be a Zebra at this floating bus stop, then the tactile paving is the wrong colour. If not, cyclists have priority & not required to stop, so WRONG either way. Bus island is level with the cycle track beyond the crossing. WRONG ‼️

If the government read #BS8300-1 and used its guidance for example there would be no floating bus stops which just serve to exclude blind people from the built environment. According to TfL's own accident figures the more floating bus stops are built the more serious cyclist accidents there are.
This guy is deluded by his own lack of competence in urban design, these bus stops are not #accessible the DoT guidance does not help urban designers, it tells them to ignore the safety guidance in #BS8300-1 and make it impossible for #blind people to use the bus despite being warned of this before guidance was published.
In praise of floating bus stops from the government despatch box: “These bus stops were often introduced with good intentions”
@flickhwilliams @bigfan_of_cats @YorkDisability @yorkpress A good document but outdated being from November 2016, it references the #NationalPlanningPolicyFramework which has been updated several times and #BS8300:2009 we now have #BS8300-1 & 2:2018 and BS EN 17210:2021. Every council needs an updated version.
@flickhwilliams @bigfan_of_cats @YorkDisability @yorkpress Architects and civil engineers to. Two British Standards for #accessible built environment, #BS8300 and #BSEN17210 the latter derives from EN directive M/420 and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with #Disabilities. These need to be part of their training and applied.
@RonnieMushiso First priority is to design/construct a built environment that works for all, we cannot rely on someone being present and assisting a #blind or #disabled person to cross the road. We have a #BS8300-1 to provide design guidance this was clearly not used here.
@FestAKINBUSOYE Not a law but a British Standard, #BS8300-1 section 6.2.2 states clearly pedestrians should not have to cross cycle lanes to access bus stops. Unfortunately government are too stupid to take expert advice, get unqualified ministers to write urban environment design guidelines.
@Heidi_Labour is not competent to issue guidance on the built environment, this should be left to our official standards body @BSI_UK who have already published guidance in #BS8300-1, pedestrians should not have cycle lanes to access bus stops, ie no floating bus stops, the governments own draft guidance on Design, Placemaking and Planning also contradicts the case for floating bus stops, walking and wheeling should be prioritised over cycling. https://t.co/rp5BYdcjFp This is nothing short of exclusion from the built environment and hence jobs especially for #blind people.
Sec of State @Heidi_Labour is due to issue guidance on floating bus stops. This will mean many blind people will never again be able to catch their bus. It breaches their UN Convention on the Rights of Disabled People to travel independently. What should they do @Heidi_Labour ?
Ignore the British Standards to exclude #blind and #disabled people from bus services at your own peril even if it takes far too long for the truth to be published. @MayorofLondon should apply the guidance in #BS8300-1.
TfL forced to correct ‘dodgy’ report claiming floating bus stops are safe.
@MayorofLondon accused of running a “masterclass in deception” after refusing to withdraw a “deeply flawed & whitewashed” safety review that was “riddled with errors”. https://t.co/IWWsyNFzbp
Also this is not in accordance with #BS8300-1 section 6.2.2. Pedestrians should not have to cross cycle lanes to access bus stops.
More AT madness in Edinburgh. “The solution to conflict between users of bicycles & users of motor vehicles must not transfer the conflict zone to one between cyclists & pedestrians particularly where this disproportionately affects disabled people.” Sight Scotland.🎯

@annwebster21 @Doug_Paulley @LordOrk @networkrail #BS8300-1 under section 8.5.1 states "Revolving gates, turnstiles, kissing gates and A-frame barriers are not accessible and should not be used unless there is an adjacent alternative accessible route." DM me if you'd like anymore from the British Standards.
@willnorman @LilianGreenwood @transportgovuk Not for cyclists either, remove all floating bus stops these are not compliant with #BS8300-1 section 6.2.2
@flickhwilliams @YorkDisability @YorkDRF Probably isn’t as wide in reality as well. I would ask that they audit their design to #BS8300-1 particularly section 9.5 but also generally.
Floating bus stops are a terrible design and not compatible with British Standards particularly #BS8300-1.
Here’s what blind people told @RNIB when asked about floating bus stops: “I have been knocked down…”; “Floating bus stops are a complete nightmare…”; “I cannot express enough how angry and frustrated I feel about bus stop bypasses…”; “I no longer visit parts of the city…”

So many cyclists failing to stop at a zebra crossing for pedestrians, one even nearly falling off as he emergency brakes for the exceptional one who gives way to pedestrians. There is no way for a blind person to know when it's safe to cross.
Design not compatible with #BS8300-1.
.@AndyBurnhamGM this is what is happening in London. These floating bus stops have never been safe or accessible for blind people.
@VincentStops #BS8300-1 might not be compulsory but that is no reason to disregard its guidance. The BS draws on the experience of hosting the 2012 Paralympic Games, it's foolish to discard that knowledge.
How is that bus stop meant to work? 95% of #wheelchairs are up to 1.3m long, add to that the length of ramp from the bus and it’s obvious it cannot work for wheelchair users will also not work for #blind people and not conform to #BS8300-1.
Council 'let down' by floating bus stop contractor https://t.co/Cz5a2Z8hkW
@mysaymysay1 @JohnJohnStewart Imagine alighting at that bus stop in a #wheelchair, you'd be in the cycle lane before fully descending the ramp. Totally inaccessible for #blind and #disabled people. #BS8300-1 says you need at last 2m of pavement at a bus stop, that is absolute minimum.
