Public #diplomacy stories often write themselves. Today, I saw one in #Bumthang. 🇨🇭🤝🇧🇹 More than 50 years ago, Swiss development pioneer Fritz Maurer, who also worked with @Helvetas, arrived in #Bhutan. Since then, he has helped introduce cheesemaking techniques, promote beekeeping and create new opportunities for rural communities. His guesthouse remains part of that legacy - a place where Swiss traditions and Bhutanese hospitality meet. I also visited the nearby carpentry workshop, café, brewery, managed by his family and a bridge built with 🇨🇭 support, all remarkable examples of the long-standing Swiss presence in the region. The day continued with visits to Bumthang’s cultural treasures, including Wangduechhoeling Palace Museum, Jakar Dzong, Tamshing Lhakhang and Kenchogsum Lhakhang. Back in #Bhutan for a week of official meetings and exchanges with researchers and the Swiss community. 🇨🇭🤝🇧🇹 On my way to #Bumthang, I met nuns at Pema Choling Nunnery, where spirituality, discipline and community come together. I then arrived at Ogyen Choling, a manor-museum managed by the🇨🇭🇧🇹 couple Walter Roder, an agronomist from Bern and Kunzang Choden, the first Bhutanese woman to write a novel in English. The two first met while working with @Helvetas. Today, they help preserve Bhutanese culture and the history of Swiss-Bhutanese ties through the museum and their acclaimed guesthouse, featured in publications such as @lonelyplanet and @NatGeoTravel.
