Perhaps it started with #DeFi. User friendly interfaces popped up for creating many new ERC20 compatible smart contracts, like @UniswapProtocol pools. Every protocol with deposits could now also issue wrapper tokens to users, pioneered by #cTokens at @compoundfinance.
