The MOLA excavations on the Bloomberg site produced amazing finds - thousands of finds, including 65,000 pottery sherds, amazing organic preservation, and wooden writing tablets - see CA 280 and 317! #calive18
One of the big challenges of the new Mithraeum reconstruction was the floor... it would have been mud, but authentic Roman mud from the anaerobic site would have smelled awful! So they used real excavated Roman soil and pottery sherds to cast a resin replica. #calive18

The Mithraeum team were also keen that the reconstruction should be as accurate as possible, using records from Grimes' digs. Learning lessons from 1962. Some of the stone excavated in 1954 had gone missing so had to do careful research to source more ragstone & bricks #calive18
The latest Mithraeum reconstruction was the design of Local Projects, who wanted to harness both the known and the unknowable/mysterious aspects of the temple - part of this involved working with a light artist #calive18
The decision was more recently taken, after the demolition of the Bucklersbury site) to dismantle the reconstruction & re-reconstruct it close to its original location, 7m below the surface, with interpretation. Had to be open to public & free - all planning conditions! #calive18
