The relationship between Somalia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a complex and multifaceted one. I have asked numerous Somalis from diverse backgrounds, including politicians if they perceive the UAE as a friend or a foe. Despite the UAE's substantial financial support to the Somali government and its efforts to train thousands of Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF) personnel at various levels including Somaliland, Puntland, and Jubbaland, the response has been overwhelmingly negative.
Many Somalis feel that the UAE has failed to understand their perspectives and needs. When asked what the UAE had done wrong, a common answer was that the UAE views Somalia through the lens of Ethiopia, often siding with positions that do not necessarily align with Somali interests. This sentiment suggests a significant disconnect and offers a valuable opportunity for the UAE to reassess and rectify its approach to win the hearts of the Somali people.
