Why I Took Profits in the First Trust Cybersecurity ETF (CIBR) Today...
The #cybersecurity stocks really rallied hard this week on, well, no news really. On Thursday, the #FirstTrustCybersecurityETF (#CIBR) made a new all-time high and triggered my next sell order along the way, trimming 9.94% of the position I hold in my End-of-the-World Portfolio at $77.89.
The sale locked in +47.52% in gains on some of the shares I bought for $52.80 on August 2, 2024 and lowered my cost basis -6.38% from $49.35 to $46.20.
Of course, I am still incredibly bullish on the long-term prospects for the cybersecurity plays; there’s simply no way #ArtificialIntelligence “#vibecoding” will be able to adequately replace the security needs for corporations, but when I see an asset rally more than +30% in slightly over a month, it’s time for some #RiskManagement profit-taking.
From here, my next buy target is $60.79, above the level of support $CIBR tested several times earlier this year, and I have no sell targets at this time as I am happy with my allocation size and cost basis.
Why I Added to the First Trust Cybersecurity ETF (CIBR) Today...
Sellers continue to pound the #cybersecurity sector, sending the First Trust #CyberSecurityETF (#CIBR) to retest its recent lows and filling my next buy order along the way at $64.75 on Wednesday.
The buy added 4.77% to my position and locked in a -7.86% discount replacing shares I sold for $70.27 on February 10, 2025. The buy also raised my per-share cost +3.57% from $47.65 to $49.35.
Normally, I hate raising my cost basis by adding above it, however the market’s reaction to the potential disruption of software by #ArtificialIntelligence is ridiculously applied for cybersecurity. With nearly 30 years of IT experience under my belt, I can tell you that, while #AI may be able to replace some enterprise software, the concept it could replace cybersecurity packages is a bit far-fetched.
Even if AI can one day do the job of cybersecurity, it will be the very companies represented in CIBR which will create AI-powered security software packages, not the end user, as trusting “vibe-coding” for what is undeniably the highest priority - data security - is something no company (nor individual) should try to do in-house.
From here, my next buy target is $59.86, above a level of support CIBR has tested several times including most recently in April 2025. My next sell target is $77.89, just under CIBR’s all-time high.
