Inspiration overload at #cijsummer
This conference is a real highlight of the year. Always pick up a few tips for my @sheffjournalism Investigative module (and fab guests for our #jusmasterclass programme).
Heading back up north in awe of all the amazing journalism showcased.

When @joshi, during his session @cijournalism's #CIJSummer Conference said investigative journalism is the key reason for @millmediauk's 10k subscriber base in just 5 years, it got my head raised.
Learning how to connect readers is what investigative journalists must ace.

Great to see Goldsmiths Masters in Digital Journalism alum @matildakdavies presenting on SARs at #cijsummer at Goldsmiths @MediaComGold

Now attending Digital Security Fundamentals at #CIJSummer by @cijournalism . The session is focused on the evolving threats journalists face in the digital age (phishing, hacking, harassment and surveillance). This session breaks down real tactics used to compromise journalists and offers practical, day-to-day tools for staying safe, secure messaging, encrypted storage, safer cross-border travel with devices, and more.
There is no longer a clear line between your personal and professional digital life. Threat actors exploit both.

Next up at #CIJSummer: OSINT: 101 Places to Investigate Your Country.
This session is blowing open the myth that all the useful data about your country is locked behind national walls. From foreign lobbying disclosures in the U.S. to corporate registries in offshore jurisdictions, there’s a global paper trail that can help uncover what’s happening back home.
If you want to know: Who’s suing your country abroad? Where your government is spending money overseas? Which foreign NGOs or firms are operating without scrutiny? What public data exists about your country outside your country?
This is the kind of knowledge that equips journalists and researchers in restrictive environments.

Sitting in on “Digital Investigations: OSINT, Trade Data, and AI” high-stakes session at #CIJSummer chaired by Adeolu Adekola (@Theyolu).
This panel explores the cutting edge of digital methodologies in investigative journalism used to track flood support funding in Nigeria, map sanctions evasion and tracing exploitation on platforms like OnlyFans.
What ties it all together is the power of open data, digital footprints, and AI tools to hold power to account (even when the stories cross borders and the truth hides behind algorithms).

Currently attending the #CIJSummer keynote with Channel 4’s Cathy Newman, a deeply powerful session on the long, painstaking investigation into John Smyth, one of the most prolific serial abusers in the Church of England.
The session is a sobering reminder of the role journalism plays in confronting institutional silence, seeking justice for survivors, and following the truth across borders (no matter how long it takes or how protected the abuser may be.)
From a single letter to a multi-country investigation, Cathy and her team’s work embodies the kind of accountability reporting that continues to inspire. @cijournalism

Now attending a session on “OSINT: Uncovering Digital Footprints” by Sarah Cammarata.
From mapping corporate networks to verifying identities and locations, OSINT is fast becoming one of the most important tools in modern investigative journalism. 🕵🏽♂️🔍

Thanks to Guy Porter for such terrific session on “Building Investigations with Open Source Intelligence” at the ongoing @cijournalism #CIJSummer conference. From social media to satellite imagery, it’s incredible how much evidence is hiding in plain sight if you know where to look. 🔍

Back in London for the #CIJSummer 2025 by @cijournalism
From having a room of persons from every continent yesterday during the sold-out Climate Investigations Masterclass, I am hosting a three-faced digital investigations conversation on using trade-data, AI, and OSINT today.

Back in London for my 3rd year at the Centre for Investigative Journalism’s Summer Conference — leading conversations on climate investigations and accountability journalism.
Over the past 3 years, our work with CIJ’s Open Climate Reporting Initiative (OCRI) and CJID has supported over 140 journalists in West Africa with training, grants, and newsroom development, including helping establish dedicated climate desks in Nigeria and Ghana.
The work continues. The climate story is too urgent not to investigate.

Great to hear Goldsmiths MSc Digital Journalism alum Guy Porter speak about OSINT at #CIJSummer
