🧵⬇️🧐 Dear Ontario: our #primefarmland + growers are ideally suited to respond to gaps in global food supply. If only we don't seal productive areas under sprawl first! #Class1Soil in moderate climate is a privilege we must not squander in the face of worldwide crises. #OnPoli

I hope you also get @MayorKevinAshe to sign the #SaveSoil pledge and declare a #SaveSoilDay for #Pickering when you hold your event there on Saturday! April 24th Council Meeting seems like a perfect day to make the declaration Mayor Ashe!

And there you have it! Not one brave group in the bunch willing to stand up and say: ‘we know better, so we plan to do better!’
Houses don’t need prime farmland, farmers do!

"'People don’t really realize the quality of soil in this area,' said Clayton Reesor, a farmer. 'Some people might think ‘farmland is farmland – it’s everywhere,’ but in the GTA we have Class 1 soil, which is some of the best-rated.'

NEWS FLASH @AsheCouncillor! These lands are Class 1 Soil: rare +precious. Are you suggesting the good people at @OMAFRA are not subject matter experts and professionals in their field of study? We cannot manufacture more #primefarmland. Houses don't need #Class1Soil; farmers do!
Provincial and municipal leaders are telling you that more sprawl is the answer to housing affordability. That’s an expensive, sprawling lie. #onpoli #MunPoli #Ontario #DurhamRegion #FoodlandOntario #LoveOntAg #Class1Soil #ClimateActionNow #SwimDrinkFish

One thing is consistent across the province:
- YES to new neighbours!
- NO to sacrificing #class1soil, #wetlands + headwaters to houses and warehouses and highways!!!
Plan for #completecommunities using existing growth areas! Help get us out of cars!!

Who loves #SexySoil maps?! Look at all that precious #Class1Soil in #DurhamRegion! It's in same place where pressure for more houses + warehouses is greatest! #SoilisLife + #LocalFoodSystems are BIG #JobCreators. Fight for this #PrimeAgriculturalSystem!

I'm confident we can do hard things. Let's build 1.5 million new homes WITHOUT using #primefarmland. Need for housing is real. Need to protect #class1soil is real too. If we can plan for life on Mars, we can plan housing that doesn't sprawl onto foodlands! https://t.co/9hXCZ4PuyZ
Why should we care about farmland loss in #Ontario? Because only a small fraction of the earth can grow food and we are lucky to have fertile soils here. With the privilege of productive farmland comes the global responsibility to protect it.

@budgie_girl2 Likewise! #Markham’s remaining farmland is #Class1Soil and has highest LEAR scores in the region. These parcels are worthy of protection in the #greenbelt but instead are 100% on the chopping block for urban expansion. In attached image, look at bright RED areas on bottom right.
