I am causing trouble for myself here, but @ExnerPirot is right. The Americans are offering chaos. If we offer something consistent, including climate policy, I would argue capital would flow. I don’t think the nature nor stringency of #climpol matters; it’s consistency that’s key
If you are wondering why CEOs are getting more pointed, it is because they see the enormous opportunity laying at our country’s feet, but our political leaders are still not bending down to pick it up.
Let’s act with some urgency for once. Let’s attract some @%#! investment.
In the era of affordability politics, making clean energy cheaper may be a more viable emissions mitigation strategy than making dirty energy more expensive. My latest over at The Climate Brink digs into the debate: https://t.co/9qDDjDHnOW
Interesting point for #climpol. The EU ETS II, set for 2027, introduces a separate cap & trade system for emissions from fuels used in buildings and road transport. The system targets a 42% reduction in CO2 by 2030 re 2005 and places the obligation on fuel suppliers not end-users
Of interest to #trade & #climpol #cdnpoli. Australia is in the same boat as us, a small, open, highly traded economy with lots of GHG intense resource industries. @AaronCosbey
Today the Australian government released the Carbon Leakage Review's second consultation paper. The paper is available here

This is true. The provs reluctant on climate policy are playing a waiting game, waiting for the Cons to win & remove the most contentious policies. What they are ignoring & not telling their base is the world has moved on to various forms of progressively more ambitious #climpol
Challenge: "When we last engaged with provinces and territories on this in 2022, all of your governments either did not propose alternative systems or … proposed systems that did not meet the minimum standard for emissions reductions"

Every time you get depressed watching the US, Canada & Mexico struggle with ambitious climate policy at the national level, remember that there is a lower state/provincial level that is charging hard & will not quit even if the federal levels swing against #climpol policy in 2025
#NewJersey officially adopted the Advanced Clean Cars 2 rule yesterday, joining CA, VT, NY, WA, OR, MA, VA, RI, MD and CT to require all new cars, pickup trucks, and SUVs sold in the state to be zero emission by 2035 w/interim targets starting in 2027 https://t.co/Fxcchk9CNN
One of those weird climate stories where the #climpol opposition created a narrative, in this case of declining EV sales, & *despite the data* managed to have it taken as fact. Likely the most interesting thing in this is the sensitivity of *all* car sales to interest rates.
Have you also read “EV sales are slowing “?
It’s misinformation. In Europe year-on-year BEV sales are 63% higher than last year between January and August.

But what creates lock in & supportive constituencies? Maybe an industry that depends on #climpol (HPs, EVs, wind, solar?) Maybe the use of revenues to reduce inc & corp taxes (eg BC)? Maybe the absence of big fossil fuel interests constantly pulling the other way (eg PQ, EU) 2/n
There’s lots of teeth gnashing about the ineffectiveness of carbon pricing, but arguably most of the support for this comes from the real danger of future govts pausing or eliminating it. But this applies to all #climpol operating on current investment & behaviour., inc regs 1/n
@gnievchenko Exactly! I spoke at a DAC conference earlier this week, & the number of "can do!" start-ups was incredible. They know how outlandish it seems, from not even a 1 Mt/yr unit w/ no broad market, $100s/t out of the #climpol money, to 1Gt by 2030 to 5ish by '50, but they are gung ho

Japan has always been a little quixotic with its hyper focus on H2, but from a global experimental #climpol lab POV Japan's H2 fixation is a good thing - we need lots of serious, varied & "try until you break it" experimentation with all the decarb strategies for maximum learning
For the industrial #climpol wonks "Kishida also said his government would announce a new Contracts for Difference-style (CfD) scheme that would subsidise the difference between the price of clean hydrogen and grey H2 made from unabated natural gas or coal." @dalebeugin
@hishamzerriffi I walked away from that article furious. However, 40% of the developed world electorate is living in the same fantasy. Add 11% for other reasons and you have a problem. Building cross party #climpol consensus is one of the most serious problems of the age, short of nuclear war.
