Yesterday I was in Minden discussing our project #mappingtheobject as part of the #lwlKulturstiftung #powr2024
Interesting discussions about #Colonialobjects in small museum collections and connections to today, public awenes and racism
Anthropologist Amade M’charek of @UvA_Amsterdam will analyse competing notions of value that inform #colonialobjects in museum collections. Part of new project Pressing Matter @NWONieuws #NationaleWetenschapsagenda https://t.co/s9f3ofcvDu
So much for the argument that there are no official demands for the #restitution of #ColonialObjects .
Nigerian ambassador to Germany confirms request. Should also have meaning for British Museum #BeninBronzes

@GUnrecht @MFA_Nigeria @HenningMelber Nigerian govt has been consistent in its demand for restitution over the decades, from Ekpo Eyo in 1968 as head of the fed govt’s antiquities dept, to the Fed Legislature in 2002, to Culture Minister Adetokunbo Kayode in 2008, to yours truly in last weeks Cultural event in Berlin
Lovely to be able to access papers from the ongoing Museum Collections in Motion conference and recordings of keynotes https://t.co/U1m68IEJfx @EUEchoes #colonialism #colonialobjects #restitution
Thread on (changes to) draft collective statement of German ministers of cultural affairs re. #ColonialLegacy and #restitution of #ColonialObjects (in German)
This is one of the elephants (or rather dinosaurs) in the room, when we talk about #restitution of #colonialobjects in Berlin. The world's largest dinosaur skeleton in @MfNBerlin
The other one being the #Nefertiti. Whereas the 550 #BeninBronzes could be split, those two cannot.

„Ivory Coast said Wednesday it had drawn up a list of 148 works of art taken during the colonial period that it wants France to return.“

The British Museum’s “Looting” Problem
"The venerable museum has 'given back' some stolen Iraqi antiquities, but that does not mean it's ready to atone for its colonial-era sins." @coloniallegacy

@SarahEBond @SGOKIdehistorie It would also be interesting to see what "collecting" antiques mean, given the current debate on #StolenObjects #ColonialObjects and #restitution
However „loaning“ stolen objects back to where they were stolen from may add insult to injury, @ChasingAphrodit. I‘d suggest that ownership is returned and (some) objects are loaned to European (&American) museums as a generous gift! #ColonialObjects #restitution @coloniallegacy
WashPost headline says it all: "European museums may loan back some works stolen from former colonies"
When will American museums speak openly about their past acquisitions?
https://t.co/FWaTS3OOiN
Of course the do! But whose public, this is the key question! It is the European one, not that where the objects originate from. #HumboldtForum #restitution #ColonialObjects @coloniallegacy
#BritishMuseum said “great public benefit” in keeping statue in museum. This is in keeping with its stance on #repatriation claims, lengthy disputes over Parthenon Marbles, Nigeria’s #Benin Bronzes. Chile’s national treasures minister request “seems appropriate” @coloniallegacy
Seeing and being inspired by art which is where it belongs/was taken from, and which is ccessible by all, from the Global North & the Global South is, what debate about #ColonialObjects and #restitution is all about
Brilliant that Rodin could see the Parthenon marbles at the BM. The Rodin of the 21st Century will be equally inspired by seeing them *all* in Athens #ChangeisComing

A #loan is not #restitution
I would like to suggest an alternative! Europe restitutes ownership of #colonial #objects back to Africa and then gets a long term loan of (some) objects for display in Europe. See my short video interview here: https://t.co/MvWiq2WCOJ

When objects are returned, the blind spot, which they leave, needs to be kept, in order not to loose the history of colonial looting.
One alternative would be to keep some objects on display as a #loan from its African owner, though

Any process of return should be accompanied by epistemic work and a critique of the ethnographic so that return is not merely physical and a matter of museum administration and collections management https://t.co/S8jrOaR1Xs
Prussian Heritage Foundation willing to restitute objects to Tanzania, which were taken to Germany during the Maji-Maji war in the then colony German East-Africa.
