Some #achlorophyllous highlights of 2019 growing season in neUS: red #Hypopitys lanuginosa & white #Monotropa uniflora (both #Ericaceae); and yellow #Conopholis americana (#Orobanchaceae). First two are #mycoheterotrophs; latter a #parasite directly on other plants (Quercus).

#MidWest #parasites. #IndianPipe (#Monotropa uniflora) and #BearCorn/#CancerRoot (#Conopholis americana) - one mooches off #fungi (which mooch on trees), the other off tree roots (#Quercus/#Fagus). #parasiticplants #Michigan #Ericaceae #Orobanchaceae (photos: M Christenhusz)

#ParasiticPlant sighting! #Conopholis americana (#Orobanchaceae) blooming in neUS. It grows on tree roots as #holoparasite- dependent on & getting all key resources from its host. Photosynthetic ability lost & chloroplast genome ‘plastome’ highly reduced: https://t.co/7JTSYk2FTB
