10 years ago, I voted with 17,410,741 others to leave the European Union. This was the poster I had on my window, produced by the Labour Party in 1975.
I did so because, as a democratic socialist, I believe that the ability to plan our national economy should be in the hands of governments directly accountable to British voters at general elections.
Nothing in the decade since has shaken that core belief. In fact, as the years have gone by, I have become more convinced of its importance.

If we were a serious country, scrapping the triple lock on pensions would be a consensus position and there would be a serious discussion about means testing the state pension

This is the underlying reason the Tories and Labour have both been rejected. What is required will have to be radical. Our economy is not working, and incremental tinkering around the edges will never be enough. It needs a complete rethink, and that may require some pain before it pays off.
@NeilDotObrien The rise in what we call 'The Entitlement State' has been years in the making. It cannibalises public investment, reduces productivity and harms long-term growth and prosperity (detailed in the @SDPhq new green paper ' 'The Investment State' - link below).

Overton window on the move again. The U.K. cannot afford its absurd welfare state - and the number of people prepared to say so is rising very fast.
It’s over for the French and European welfare system. That’s purely unsustainable in the long run. Politicians might not want to admit it publicly but reality will hit very hard in the upcoming years.
