10 years ago, I voted with 17,410,741 others to leave the European Union. This was the poster I had on my window, produced by the Labour Party in 1975. I did so because, as a democratic socialist, I believe that the ability to plan our national economy should be in the hands of governments directly accountable to British voters at general elections. Nothing in the decade since has shaken that core belief. In fact, as the years have gone by, I have become more convinced of its importance.

If I had to explain the problem with the UK in a nutshell is that working & trying to make a better life for yourself is simply not incentivised or rewarded. From both directions. On one hand you have the old money elite who just want to keep their privileges and have done little to improve the country (loss of noblesse oblige). On the other hand, you have the left, a large swathe of which simply doesn't understand that we need to reward working people and who sees their role as ever expanding benefits for those who don't. Why would you work in this country? Unless you have a high income, it's become easier to just coast on benefits.

Squeeze an extra £15,000 out of a nurse, a tradesman and an accountant through fiscal drag and then use it to fund welfare for fifteen people who are dependent on the state. You lose three votes. You gain fifteen. That is modern British democracy in a nutshell. Approximately 53.3% of UK individuals live in households that are net recipients from the state. In a democracy, that is a permanent majority. The uncomfortable truth is that democracy and fiat currency are incompatible. A currency that can be printed at will gives politicians an infinite credit card and when you hand that to a democracy, the outcome is inevitable. Politicians will always promise more than they can afford. Voters will always choose the path of least resistance. The productive will always subsidise the unproductive. A state of constant redistribution from those who create wealth to those who rely on it. This is clearly unsustainable and will lead to the collapse of the British State. A return to sound money is the only solution.
