Doctors using #CostOfTraining as a ‘reason’ to earn more, assuming Nurses & AHPs haven’t had a £ to gain their career 🤦🏽♀️
Personally…

7 years, all self-funded, with ZERO support from the NHS!
What’s your point again? 🤷🏽♀️
@HJohnson2FSD Absolutely. #Costoftraining is a problem across the career spectrum. This is becoming more of a problem as #MedEd is increasingly industrialised
@TurtonsOther @MRCPUK Hi Pete. Gonna try to get transparent details from the colleges as lots have this question. I’ve just started but will get back to you (and others) shortly. #costoftraining is something @RCPEdinTrainees is concerned about.
I’m all for “enhancing junior doctors working lives” & good work has been done with this. But news like this undermines that hard work & is an insult to talented, qualified professionals up to their eyeballs in debt from #costoftraining & real terms pay cuts.
The average UK surgical trainee will spend £9105 on courses #costoftraining #choosewisely #surgery #surgtiwtter
@rsb8s Hi Becky. Thanks for your feedback. #costoftraining is obviously a major issue & one I’ve experienced as a trainee & student myself. I’ve commented in more depth here:

@scullingmonkey Unfortunately virtual meetings, particularly at this scale are very pricey to run.
I recognise the huge #costoftrianing issue & have been advocating for keeping fees as low as poss for trainees/students
Comparable to/cheaper than AMEE, BAD, RCP, RCGP, RCPsych, DEMEC etc
@scullingmonkey But as I've highlighted, #costoftraining is a huge systemic issue & ASME recognises this. Lots of initiatives to try to support #MedEd scholarship, like our awards, internships, smaller events & activity of our SIGS/Committees/@tasme_uk/@jasme_uk
Lots in pipeline too!
@jamestoml1 @ValleyWye Would be fascinated to see burnout study on #CovidCohort who already have to deal with industrialisation of #MedEd & #costoftraining.
Today’s leaders (read: consultants) didn’t have to jump the hoops or scale the heights they now set.
If you are going to spend time and energy into monitoring the athlete’s readiness and jump tests on a weekly basis then make sure that you use the information for indications of adaptability and not exclusively for performance. #costoftraining
Well that's a wrap for this week's #MedEdForum, and our 2nd #asmebitesize special! We've had some brilliant suggestions for reimagining #MedEd, including widening access, IPE, #TEL solutions, #costoftraining innovations, #gamification, #mentorship & hidden curriculum. Amazing!
Moving into PG again, another fab point. How do we improve #costoftraining? It feels like it's an unstoppable industry... #mededforum #asmebitesize
@Bex13Yates @asmeofficial @PaulElliott_ #costoftraining is huge and often ignored - my non-medic friends are always shocked by the cost of maintaining my ability to practice, course fees and compulsory exams #MedEdforum

The worst thing about medicine is the monetisation of EVERY SINGLE step of your career, from pre medical school UKCAT courses, core training interview prep, PACES courses that cost ££££ and consultant interviews.
My suggestions:
- Consider reform of PG curricula (yes, more of that, I’m afraid)
- Reflect on accessibility of competitive programmes
- Adjustment of points systems/interviews
- Another look at #costoftraining. AoMRC did this in 2017, but landscape has changed..
Lots of obvious implications for #costoftraining & #FOAMed but this industry (and it is an industry) is growing as #medstudents use their critical appraisal skills to decide on preferred platforms to supplement their mainstream uni delivery. #MedEd
@aimeecharnell @AMEE_Online We absolutely need to look closely at the #costoftraining in a new #COVID19 world where study budgets will likely be impacted severely. Have to balance high event costs with need to avoid financial disparities in #MedEd
@veggieequallife Implications for #costoftraining esp in a time when study budgets hard to access for #trainees
@shwepe1 @florina_stanley @JackSamways7 @BJCAstarter @DrMarkMills @tom__slater @covid Training in teaching is actually extensively funded in certain regions. Last year there were 101 clinical teaching fellows in the NE alone who all had PGCert funded. There are sources of funding. But yes, we need to look hard at #costoftraining
@ASiTofficial #asit2020 #costoftraining #surgery #mrcs still spaces on our weekend course (next week) Priced at £250 - non-profit for #traineesurgeons (https://t.co/bQDbmfFKPv)
