The organisation said there is a "knowledge gap” among new recruits and members in local stations that has left Women's Aid concerned about the "inconsistency” among gardaí when responding to domestic violence. Women's Aid chief executive Sarah Benson said the majority of contacts received by gardaí in relation to domestic violence are first received by local stations and "the boots on the ground”, rather than specialist units. "When we see good practice, it is excellent and it is life-saving, but when we see poor practice or unhelpful practice, it can knock a victim-survivor's confidence and trust so much that it may be years before they would reach out again,” she said. "It's really crucial that the training, the education, the competency is targeted at all areas of the gardaí, but most specifically where most ­victim-survivors will be the first point of contact.” A garda spokesperson said An Garda Síochána will examine the report in detail, "with a particular focus on the feedback contributed by victims and those directly affected by domestic abuse, coercive control and/or gender-­based violence”.
