2/2 Regarding #Current_Account: China's current account surplus for 2023 amounted to $264.2 billion in 2023 which was 1.5% of GDP. #China recorded a $608 billion goods trade surplus in 2023, and a $229.4 billion in service deficit. (Source: https://t.co/IU1jDajBNX)
Important things to note:
1) The Current Account is down from 10% of GDP in 2007 to 1,5% of GDP in 2023.
2) In a world where most countries are reshoring due to economic costs and geopolitical tensions, the dependency on exporting goods is likely to take a hit.
3) The global economy is slowing down; this will put even more pressure on China's current account.
4) If we take into account trading between China and #HK and see the numbers in detail, a big portion of the current account is recycled through #HongKong making it clear that a portion of China's current account might be inflated.
1/2Today, we had significant updates from #China, which included insights into Foreign Direct Investment (#FDI) & the #Current_Account. However, there is more to this than meets the eye.
Regarding FDI: In the latest report, foreign businesses' direct investment into China last year marked
Foreign firms only added $33 billion to their FDI liabilities, which was 82% lower than the 2022 level and the lowest since 1993. (Source: https://t.co/rR75JKYsvy). However, the situation is much more troubling than it initially appears.
The concept of "round-tripping" investment has been highlighted by the World Bank among other institutions. This involves Chinese domestic capital being sent offshore—commonly to Hong Kong or other jurisdictions considered tax havens—before being reinvested into mainland China as FDI.
Key observations include:
1) The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) notes that a substantial part of China's FDI comes from Hong Kong. Between 2017 and 2020, Hong Kong contributed 70.4% to China’s overall FDI, a notable increase from 63.7% between 2011 and 2015 and significantly higher than the 44.1% recorded between 2006 and 2010. 2) The World Bank and similar organizations estimate that "round-tripping" may constitute as much as 25% of the total FDI inflows into the PRC, illustrating a significant portion of investment activities.
