The drought and successive heatwaves of 2026 are no longer affecting only the traditionally vulnerable Mediterranean regions, but are also severely impacting northern Spain, where pastures, dairy farming and forage maize production are increasingly under pressure. Significant #losses are being recorded in #cereals, #vineyards, #almonds, #sunflower and other crops, while #olive groves face growing uncertainty ahead of the next harvest.
ASAJA’s data shows that the greatest threat to farmers and livestock producers is not only #lower #production, but the #combination of reduced yields and #rising #costs. Higher expenditure on animal feed, increased irrigation demands, soaring energy prices and rising input costs, combined with farm-gate prices that often fail to cover production expenses, are seriously undermining the viability of thousands of family farms across Spain.
Furthermore, ASAJA’s data demonstrates that this situation goes beyond the sector and has become a strategic issue for the #EU as a whole. Reductions in the production of cereals, forage crops, olive oil, wine, almonds and other key agricultural products weaken the productive capacity of the European agri-food sector and increase #dependence on #imports.
Safeguarding European agriculture must therefore be regarded as an essential pillar of #food #security, particularly in a global context marked by #geopolitical #instability, trade tensions and increasing competition for natural resources.
At the same time, ASAJA’s data confirms that extreme #weather events are NO longer exceptional occurrences but are becoming a recurring #challenge. European climate adaptation policies must therefore include specific measures for agriculture, such as #investment in #water #storage and regulation infrastructure, modernization and digitalization of irrigation systems, more flexible water resource management, and stronger support for research into crop varieties and production techniques that are more resilient to drought and extreme temperatures.
In addition, ASAJA’s data warns of the growing risk of #farm #abandonment, particularly in rural areas where profitability is already low and climate vulnerability is high. When farmers and livestock producers face several consecutive years of losses, their ability to continue operating, invest in their businesses and secure #generational #renewal is severely compromised. The disappearance of these farms would have consequences far beyond agriculture, accelerating rural #depopulation and eroding the economic and social fabric of large areas of Spain.
ASAJA’s data also highlights the crucial role of agricultural insurance as a key #riskmanagement #tool. However, the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events require #insurance schemes to be strengthened and remain economically accessible to farmers and livestock producers. Risk management must become a central #pillar of future #CAP.
Faced with a situation that affects strategic sectors responsible for food production, rural development and territorial cohesion, decisive action from European institutions is urgently needed. The European Commission must take #concrete #measures, including extraordinary support mechanisms for affected farmers and livestock producers, stronger risk-management instruments and investments that help agriculture adapt to an increasingly challenging climate.
#Spain 🇪🇸 , as one of the European Union’s leading agricultural producers and one of the Member States most exposed to drought and rising temperatures, #cannot be #overlooked in the European response. The European Commission must rise to this challenge and must not forget Spain, its farmers and its livestock producers, who are on the front line of climate change while continuing to guarantee food production, safeguard rural communities and contribute to Europe’s food security.
