Better get used to ‘tolerating disturbances’ from Deaf people! Something tells me we’re going to be seeing a lot more #BSL signers making public interventions in the coming years - in the Houses of Parliament too! #DemocraticDeaficit #BSLActNow #BSLActWow
Those who care about the #BSL National Plan and the #DemocraticDeaficit experienced by BSL users should be following this carefully. @frankie_mclean @grantyferguson @JDenerley @jconama_bosco66 @bjfletcher @PGerra @HepnerAvril @aud2526 @OliverEscobar @jeffmcw @DemDeaficit et al.
Serious criticisms of @bordnagaidhlig1 by @ScotParl
committee.
This is an important juncture for #Gaelic policy in Scotland.
(The issue of 'legality' is a red herring though)

Suggestion from @WilsonMcLeod that creation of a Gaelic board has sometimes been seen as government keeping Gaelic issues “away from their desks” - giving the community responsibility to strengthen Gaelic without power to actually do it. Salient to BSL too. #DemocraticDeaficit
When five MSPs are participating in a conference on the future of BSL (only one of those below is an invited speaker), I’ll be even more confident that our Parliament is fully invested in #BSLEnlightenment. Deaf MSPs? Preferably.🤞🏽🙌🏽Signing hearing MSPs?👍🏽 #DemocraticDeaficit
A great half year learning & deliberating about #BSL #DemocraticDeaficit Clear appetite for action to follow! Thanks to everyone (participants & interpreters), it’s been amazing to feel so included while being a minority in the process. Thanks to @grahamhturner for the opportunity!
And that's a wrap! Keep an eye out for future updates in due course and many thanks to all those who have been involved in the #SigningParliament process! #DemocraticDeaficit

Our chair Debra Wherrett introduced a wonderful flag metaphor for the #SigningParliament - @jeffmcw now asks "where is the wind to make that flag fly?" #DemocraticDeaficit
With under 3 weeks to go till #GeneralElection2019, not a single party has a #BSL (#BritishSignLanguage) version of their #manifesto on their website (although @TheGreenParty and @LibDems promise one is “coming soon”). That’s a lot of voters to ignore. #DemocraticDeaficit #GE2019
The biggest barrier to #Deaf participation in politics? MONEY 💷Who pays for #access (interpreters, captions, etc)? The #AccessToElectedOfficeFund must be maintained, but political parties could also impose an #access tax on party members) (h/t @John_Brownlie) #DemocraticDeaficit
Groups at #DemocraticDeaficit this afternoon have been tasked with identifying & prioritising actions to ensure the best possible engagement of the signing community with local authorities, @ScotParl and @UKParliament. #SigningParliament
Lots of good ideas on establishing an elected #SigningParliament - provide political training, learn from eg @ScotParl on the election process, include rural #Deaf (online platforms, local hustings?) & provide a clear job description for signing MPs (SMPs?). #DemocraticDeaficit
We're going to take a break from the livestream now so we can split into smaller groups. We'll be back at 1540 for our final presentations - please do join us then! #SigningParliament #DemocraticDeaficit
The idea of 'directness' keeps coming up. The #DemocraticDeaficit is so often due to deaf people lacking direct access to democracy and democratic processes #SigningParliament
Having clearly identified the problem, @bjfletcher is now showing his solution. A website where BSL users can sign a message to their MP in BSL, in the same way a hearing person could write a message in English #SigningParliament #DemocraticDeaficit
So excited to hear @bjfletcher again as part of the final #DemocraticDeaficit workshop. Hope you’re watching the livestream because Ben is giving a masterclass in practical political thinking about inclusion, action, democracy ... Always insightful and inspiring! #demopart
"We're complaining to each other" - @bjfletcher explaining how deaf views are often ignored #DemocraticDeaficit #SigningParliament
We just had one of the most insightful discussions I’ve heard about the possibility of using #sortition #civiclottery to select a portion of a potential Signing Parliament. Folk engaged in the #DemocraticDeaficit workshops are keen on building an institution that is truly diverse
Another option for the potential composition of a #SigningParliament is a combined model: some elected members and some chosen at random (like jury service), and the option to select / call upon people with certain skills and expertise (eg to give evidence). #DemocraticDeaficit
Lively debate at #DemocraticDeaficit about whether hearing people who can sign (eg interpreters or #CODAs - Children Of #Deaf Adults) would / should qualify as members of a #SigningParliament. Which is more important - signing ability or #Deafhood / Deaf lived experience? Views?
Now #DemocraticDeaficit delegates have been split into groups to discuss the merits of 3 potential models for a #SigningParliament:
1) elected (like @ScotParl?)
2) selected (like #BSLNAG) or
3) a randomly-generated group (like a #CitizensAssembly).
Or something else?
