Devli, a historic village in Delhi, faces urbanization's erasure, losing its cultural roots and the iconic bangla, symbolizing its forgotten heritage. Devli is not easy to find if you do not already know it. It sits somewhere between Sangam Vihar and Sainik Farms in south Delhi, compressed into the gap between two neighbourhoods wildly different from each other -- one a vast unauthorised colony of working people, the other also an unauthorised colony but categorised as “affluent” and is a forested enclave of large houses and concrete lanes. Area near Motilal Nehru school of sports, Rai village in the 1960s. #dillidehat #DilliDehat This picture from the 1960s shows an area near the present-day MNSS, Rai, before the school came into existence. For many families from the villages of Delhi, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh, the Motilal Nehru School of Sports, Rai became a rare institution offering quality education and world-class sports facilities to children from ordinary agrarian backgrounds. Unlike many elite schools in Delhi — built on lands acquired from village communities — Rai opened its doors to those very communities. Even today, schools such as Sanskriti, Vasant Valley, Springdales, DPS, Modern, etc remain out of reach for most native village families, despite standing on lands that once belonged to them, further widening the social and educational gap created through urbanisation. Ram Verma, in his book Three Lals of Haryana, wrote: “It also became the only state in the country to set up a full-fledged non-elitist public school, enabling both boys and girls of the poorer sections of the community to get quality education at par with the best public schools. As an added advantage, it had perhaps the best sports infrastructure of any school, not only in India but in any of the neighbouring countries as well. Vast avenues for future employment opened up to the children of the Motilal Nehru School of Sports in Rai. I have come across IAS officers, architects, engineers, surgeons, economists, entrepreneurs and corporate executives proudly mentioning that they were products of the school.” Someone who studied there in the 1990s told us: “I came from an agrarian background, with my father earning very little from agriculture, yet I was admitted into the school. We had teachers flying in from different countries. Whether it was sports, theatre, academics, everything was taught at the highest level.” As villages turn urban, inclusivity for native communities cannot remain an afterthought. If the original inhabitants continue to remain excluded from quality education and opportunities built on their own lands, the gap will only continue to grow.
