Prominent Zimbabwean human resource expert Memory Nguwi talking to Alpha Media Holdings chairman Trevor Ncube about what can be described as toxic leadership and the dangers of employers who don't care about and listen to their employees to the survival of the organisation.
There is irony writ large in this interview which was done on "In Conversation with Trevor" in January as Nguwi articulately and ruthlessly exposes the fatal flaw or weakness of his interviewer whose company and leadership neatly fits the description.
Nguwi talks about psychological safety - the freedom to disagree without inviting career-limiting consequences - something alien to Ncube who finds it esoteric and discomforting, even by his body language.
The memo to the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists by AMH employees about low salaries and poor working conditions is a manifestation of what Nguwi is talking about - a conversation outside because workers are not given a platform to freely air their views as they fear Ncube's backlash or being victimised.
Nguwi refers to Google's Project Oxygen that addresses what good managers do to create conducive working climates and The Fearless Organisation by Amy Edmondson which carries big lessons on how to manage people in a work environment.

Nivedita Singh, Santoshi Sengupta and Santosh Dev talk about stifling work environments and describe toxic leaders be it in the corporate world or politics as those who don't care about their employees or subordinates' interests, views and welfare; something that endangers the survival of their organisations, or even governments.
