I would simply say (again) anyone with CD4+ T cell counts < 150 has no business being anywhere near any animals at all.

1/n I came across a fascinating discussion on Encephalitozoon cuniculi, a micro-fungus that can cause nasty infections in rabbits & grossly immunologically impaired humans. But first, I want to say, MY BLOOD IS WONDERFUL FOR YOU, unless you're less than 2 weeks old. Because #CMV.
@Feminae_Vincere 10/10 Yes, #ECuniculi, #EC, spores are long-lasting etc.. However, it won't affect most people; only those with immune systems degraded to the very lowest levels are at risk. It's an ubiquitous bug, present throughout domestic & wild populations.
9/n Therefore I must disagree with @Feminae_Vincere here, on practical, medical & hygiene grounds.
a/ Notifying of presence of #ECuniculi, #EC, makes no sense. It must be assumed to be everywhere.
b/ It's not a real danger to most immunocompromised ppl.

Dropping this because it still troubles me. People deserve to know that you have E. cuniculi at the rescue when they visit/adopt/bring their pets to you for bonding. It is resilient and a risk to immunocompromised humans too. 1/2 @carrotcottagerr @chrisbunnyguy #TeamCarrotCottage
8/n In mass, it's really only HIV+ people with T-cell counts on their last legs who need to worry about #ECuniculi, #EC, and bluntly, if they're not getting treatment for their HIV, they're mad & will die anyway. Lots of other pathogens out there that'll get them.
7/n Rigorously control bedding and water for rabbits, maintain healthy hygiene habits for yourself, you should be OK. #ECuniculi, #EC, shouldn't be a worry for you unless you're GROSSLY immunologically impaired, in which case you really shouldn't be keeping any animals at all.
6/n Controlling #ECuniculi, #EC, is relatively easy. Isolate obviously ill rabbits downwind of other rabbits. Treat ill rabbits w/ a 28-day course of fenbendazole, but know recovered rabbits may still carry it. Testing for it is time-consuming, expensive, slow, w/ limited use.
5/n If you run a rabbit sanctuary, then you must assume from the outset that every rabbit you ever meet carries #ECuniculi, #EC, because so many DO, without showing symptoms. Moreover, it can be carried by dogs, European mice, foxes & other animals. It's simply a big constant.
4/n And now we get to Encephalitozoon cuniculi (a.k.a. E. cuniculi, EC, Nosema cuniculi), #ECuniculi, #EC. It's a spore-forming micro-fungus, not a virus, but in spread it's very similar to CMV.
