Our Assemblyline team gave a hands-on workshop at @FIRSTdotOrg on everything to know about the tool and how to use it. Participants in the workshop built their own service and got tips on how to scale appropriately. #FIRSTCON23
CVSS 4.0 was just announced at #firstcon23. What does this mean for vulnerability management? In the words of the great Eric Clapton... it's in the way that you use it.
CVSS gets a lot of slack for not being a be-all/end-all solution to all of our vulnerability classification problems. CVSS 4.0 includes some updates in an attempt to address this.
There are many updates, but CVSS 4.0 includes a new base metric "Attack Requirements" which according to the authors "Reflect the prerequisite conditions of the vulnerable component that make the attack possible."
This is a great step towards including more context and when combined with the "Attack Complexity" metric gives a much better picture of the vulnerability in question.
But will we ever be able to find a one-size-fits-all metric or standard?
I don't believe so and quite honestly I hope we don't.
Cybersecurity is ever changing. It's a race for innovation between us and the threat actors. Attempting to boil all of this down to one metric would put us in a silo. Silo's are not good for innovation.
Often times we rely too heavily on CVSS instead of using it as a piece of information in the greater picture. We shouldn't live or die by the CVSS score.
The updates make this data point much stronger and relevant and will absolutely allow us as security practitioners to make better decisions when combined with other data points like the Exploit Probability Scoring System (EPSS), current controls in place, and our patch management programs.
I suggest you take some time to review the presentation from Dave Dugal and Dale Rich and think about the ways that you use it.
