A few days ago I saw a video of a preacher saying, “the thing that’s bizarre in 2024 is that people can actually read and write and they’re still Catholic.” For the majority of my life, I would’ve heartily agreed with that assertion. After quoting scripture, including Ephesians 2:8-9, he says “and you’re still Catholic? Why? Because you don’t care what the Bible says; because you don’t care what Jesus Christ said; because you don’t care what the truth is…” Granted, this particular preacher is a bit of a firebrand. But I can attest that this is a common mindset, at least among the fundamentalist and Baptist circles in which I grew up. I remember being taught how to show Catholics - in their own Bibles - how to be saved. I “got saved” when I was very young. I still remember asking my parents to help me ask Jesus into my heart. I have been all-in for Jesus ever since. I’ve always known that I was a sinner, totally reliant on God’s grace for my salvation. So, how did I go from sold-out-for-Jesus Protestant to Catholic? Did I give up on the Bible? Did I turn my back on Jesus? Did I decide to disregard the truth? Of course not. I am Catholic because I wanted to know the Truth. Becoming Catholic was the last thing I wanted to do. It was completely foreign to me. There are no Catholics in my family tree all the way back to the Reformation. Nevertheless, the Truth got ahold of me and I couldn’t shake it. I am Catholic because the Bible is Catholic. If you honestly search for Truth, I think you’ll see it too. I’m not going to get into apologetics here. There are plenty of people smarter than I am who have made the case for Catholicism. I wasn’t looking to take up more restrictive religious practices like mandatory fasting on certain days or abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent. I didn’t want to abandon “once saved always saved” for confessing my sins to a priest. But here I am, trying to live my life in accordance with the teachings of the Catholic Church. I didn’t want to do it. I had to do it. And I’m so glad I did. I’m incredibly grateful that my wife came along with me. Why did we do it? Because, believe it or not, the Catholic Church has the fullness of truth. In order to be faithful to Jesus, I needed to be part of the Church he started. I cared about what the Bible says; I cared about what Jesus said; I cared about the Truth. So that’s why, in the 21st century, even though I can read and write — even though I really didn’t want to — I became Catholic.
