During its 8th seating, the Working Group on #ChildrenWithDisabilities of the ACERWC deliberated on its role in advancing the rights of children with disabilities in Africa by broadening its scope and reach. The Working Group brainstormed on the need for a #GeneralComment on article 13 of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
The meeting further highlighted the need to expand the focus of the Working Group across the various types of disabilities, particularly by amplifying the most neglected issues such as the right of children with intellectual #disabilities. Concrete action plans have been developed on how to leverage the theme of the Day of the African Child 2025 and provide recommendations on the need to invest on children with disabilities. Moreover, the #WorkingGroup identified a key collaboration with the ACERWC’s Special Rapporteur on #Education to advance the right to education of children with disabilities.

Established in December 2020, the Working Group on #ChildrenWithDisabilities was created to promote and protect the rights of children with disabilities across Africa, with a focus on addressing their unique challenges.
Since its establishment, the Working Group has undertaken several key activities to fulfill its mandate, including:
🗣️ A Day of General Discussion on solutions to the challenges faced by #ChildrenWithAlbinism, held during the 43rd ACERWC Session. This dialogue called for tailored legislative, institutional, and administrative measures to address the specific needs of children with albinism.
📍 A Fact-Finding Mission to #Malawi🇲🇼 in 2022, aimed at assessing the situation of #children with #albinism. The mission revealed the urgent need for targeted interventions to protect these children from violence and discrimination.
The Working Group continues to advocate for inclusive policies and practices that ensure the dignity, safety, and well-being of all children with disabilities across the continent.
