吉恩·夏普在1953-54年（朝鲜战争）期间，夏普因抗议征兵而被判入狱九个月。他后来在工厂当过工人，也当过美国和平主义者A. J. Muste的秘书。
1955年至1958年间，他成为和平新闻（伦敦）的一名助理编辑，他还协助组织1958年的奥尔德马斯顿游行。接下来的两年，他在奥斯陆与阿恩·内斯教授一起学习和研究。
1983年他创立阿尔伯特·爱因斯坦研究所，目的是研究和宣传用非暴力手段推进自由主义的民主过程。
夏普首创政治学新名词“ #公民防卫”，倡导非暴力抗争和公民不服从。包括过去波兰、捷克、立陶宛、爱沙尼亚、拉脱维亚等苏联附庸国争取独立，到塞尔维亚人反抗独裁者米洛塞维奇，以及颜色革命，乌克兰的栗子花革命，吉尔吉斯斯坦的郁金香革命，缅甸的番红花革命，茉莉花革命，到阿拉伯之春等一连串政治抗议运动，都被视为减少社会动荡与民众痛苦和不流血更换政权的和平演变与非暴力抗争的不可防御的创造性的实践的典范。
吉恩·夏普 #非常关注台湾民主。他曾于1994年到过台湾，对台湾的民主发展情况有所了解。2011年12月，夏普提醒，若2012年蔡英文胜选，可能面对来自中国威胁的“高风险”；建议蔡英文，应赶在任期第二年内推动建构台湾“群众性公民防卫”的相关立法，以对抗强权侵略与维护公民利益。
2018年1月尾爱恩斯坦研究所行政总监 Jamila Raqib 公布，夏普在波士顿家中离世，研究所发声明形容，夏普毕生致力研究非暴力抗争，启发了世界各地的学者、行动者，团体，及至政府机构。
