Be a little extra vigilant at the below locations
- Train/Bus Stations
- When taking Public Transport
- Attractions
- Crowded places on the street
- Clubs/Pubs/Restaurants
- Beaches
Also don't think that pickpockets are only in bigger crowded cities. They can be at some small Swiss town too. Never let your guard down.
1. You don't need to carry your passport along with you everywhere. Keep it back in your hotel/hostel. If depositing with the reception always take a receipt. If you need to carry make sure it's safe inside your bag. Always have a full passport color xerox along in case any Police Officer etc asks for it. Yes, I know some countries mandate to keep it along with you always but I have kept it safe in hostel and explained to Police and they were fine. Final your call.
2. Invest in a proper day bag with proper inside pockets which can store your valuables. Make sure you lock the chains so they can't be opened easily. Het a numeric lock. No need to keep the key safe etc. Carry your bag in the front when in crowds or public transport. Also tuck all important things in the bottom inside the inner compartment and don't just put it in the outside one.
3. My favorite. Push off anyone coming too close to ask you anything. Never trust anyone. Talk from a distance. I have done this so many times. Most of the times they just walk away. If they wanna talk they will from distance or they were just pick-pocketers. I know it's wrong/rude with the person but I don't want to get my things stolen and then regret. This has kept me safe from not getting robbed in 42 countries.
4. Put your smartphone in the bag when not holding in your hands. Don't keep it in any of your pockets even for a few minutes while at any attractions / crowded places.
5. Avoid using the phone if you have boarded and are standing at a bus/metro door. They will snatch the phone as the door starts to close. You can't do anything.
6. Carry cash in a few different places and not all in one place. Some in wallet. Some in bag. Some in your pocket etc. Do invest in a money belt or pouch. This helps much. Wear it under your clothes on your body. If keeping your passport in it makes sure it's waterproof, as you'll sweat.
7. Keep your valuables at home and not worth wearing around if you plan to visit a place and have to take many public transport for a commute.
8. Indians have a habit to keep wallets in their back pockets. Never do that even if you're wearing a jeans and think it's safe. Just empty all your pockets and put everything in your handbag.
9. While in a crowded place and need to check something on your phone or a map etc get to one corner of the area or a nearby shop and then do it peacefully. When you're distracted you can get pick pocketed and won't even know what suddenly happened.
10. Do Google and just read about the popular scams happening in the city you are visiting. This will help you avoid them.
11. Some hotels/hostels don't accept passports at reception and tell you to keep in your room. If a good star hotel is fine or else pack a small bag and put your passport & valuables and keep it at the baggage storage at the reception. Have no shame in locking it up. They'll happily store it and give you a receipt too.
