Found between Jones Beach–Tobay beach, Long Island NY,.
The Storm uncovered this possible glacial cobble / or maybe an ancient worked tool. It is perfectly flat on one side, it balances upright perfectly with all 3 sides. I’m stumped. Not an expert, just a beach walker.
Any feedback appreciated
🟥 ⛏️ Madison Boulder Natural Area
in Madison, New Hampshire, protects one of the largest known glacial erratics in North America and among the world's most impressive examples.

▶️ The massive boulder consists of Conway granite, a coarse-grained pinkish rock formed deep underground during the Devonian period around 400 million years ago as part of the White Mountain magma series.
▪️ It measures approximately 83 feet long, 37 feet wide, and 23 feet high above ground (with an additional 10-12 feet buried below), giving it a roughly rectangular shape and an estimated weight exceeding 5,000 tons (over 10 million pounds).
▪️ The boulder was originally part of a fractured bedrock ledge, likely Whitten Ledge about 1.5 to 3 miles to the northwest in the White Mountains.
▪️ During the Wisconsinan glaciation, the peak of the Last Glacial Maximum around 25,000 years ago, the Laurentide Ice Sheet advanced southward across New England, reaching thicknesses of up to 2-3 kilometers in places.
▪️ Basal ice at the glacier's bottom, under immense pressure and lubricated by meltwater, froze onto jointed and weathered bedrock outcrops.
▪️ Through the process of glacial plucking, the ice quarried and lifted large blocks like this one from their source.
▶️ As the ice sheet flowed southeastward at rates of tens to hundreds of meters per year, it entrained the boulder within its lower layers, transporting it several miles without significant rounding or abrasion due to its protected position.
▪️ Around 14,000-12,000 years ago, as global temperatures rose and the ice margin retreated northward, ablation (melting) outpaced advance, causing the glacier to stagnate and deposit its load of debris.
▪️ The boulder was lowered onto foreign bedrock of Concord granite composition, creating a classic erratic whose mismatched lithology clearly indicates glacial transport rather than local weathering.
Today, it rests in a forested clearing, partially embedded in glacial till, with a short trail providing easy access.
Acquired by the state in 1946 and designated a National Natural Landmark in 1970, it stands as a premier example of the Laurentide Ice Sheet's enormous erosive and transport capacity, capable of moving house-sized blocks over distances far greater than typical stream or landslide processes.

GLACIERS IN KANSAS?! 😮
Near the bank of Clinton Lake is a large deposit of Sioux Quartzite boulders that originated in Minnesota and South Dakota and were transported here by glaciers!
