#GoldRanchFire Update:
Fire containment has increased to 88% as firefighters persist in their efforts to secure and reinforce containment lines. Crews are actively working to identify and extinguish remaining hot spots within the duff layer and root systems using the cold trailing method. Cold trailing is a meticulous process used by wildland fighters to ensure that fire lines are thoroughly extinguished and to prevent any smoldering embers from reigniting. This method involves a detailed inspection of the containment line by physically feeling for residual heat. Firefighters use their hands or specialized tools to detect any lingering warmth along the line. If heat is detected, firefighters promptly apply water or other extinguishing agents to cool down these hot spots, ensuring that all potential sources of ignition are fully extinguished. This critical step helps to prevent the fire from reigniting or spreading beyond the containment line and is not a one time process. The cold trailing method is very similar to the drown, stir, feel method used to extinguish campfires.
In areas that are secure fire hose is being backhauled. Firefighters may need to revisit areas of the fire multiple times to ensure that no new heat sources are detected and that the area remains safe.
**Fire Behavior**
Minimal creeping and smoldering activity have been located during cold trail operations. Dust and ashes may be visible as the areas get stirred up from mop up process or during gusts of wind. Firefighters remain dedicated to thoroughly managing and containing the fire, employing these strategic techniques to protect our communities and natural resources.
**Evacuations**
All evacuations have been lifted. Fire managers ask that the area is limited to essential access only. Public and firefighter safety is priority, please remain cautious of ongoing hazards in the area. Hazard tree removal and suppression operations are still active. Power was restored last night to all customers affected by the #GoldRanchFire. ⚡️ We want to take a moment to thank all our field workers who worked around the clock during the active wildfire to address damages to our infrastructure.

The City of Reno shared these photos with media this morning, reporting that as of last night the containment of the 657 acre Gold Ranch Fire increased “dramatically to 80%.” #goldranchfire

#GoldRanchFire Update:
Due to efforts made on the ground by state, local and federal firefighting agencies significant progress has been made and the containment percentage has increases dramatically to 80%. Yesterday, the fire line held strong throughout the day despite gusty winds. Fire crews are continuing mopping up, a crucial phase in wildfire management that prevents flare-ups and ensures the fire is fully extinguished. This process is labor-intensive and time-consuming, requiring meticulous attention to detail. Using water and specialized tools, they stir and clear away unburned vegetation or debris that could fuel the fire. In some cases, heat can linger in root systems, so crews may dig down to ensure all hidden heat is fully extinguished. Firefighters are actively working to mitigate hazards by removing hazardous trees from work sites, residential areas, and along the riverbanks. There has been a slight decrease in acreage due to more accurate mapping.
**Fire Behavior**
Firefighters are diligently identifying and extinguishing smoldering areas, embers, or logs that could reignite. Interior smoke will be visible from creeping and smoldering fire activity as crews continue working on extinguishing pockets of timber and mahogany that continue to retain heat. Creeping and smoldering will continue as firefighters urge residents to remain cautious in areas with weakened trees, downed powerlines, and holes left by burned stumps.
**Evacuations**
Fire managers ask that the Level 2 evacuation area remains limited to essential access only. Public and firefighter safety is priority, please remain cautious of ongoing hazards in the area. #GoldRanchFire Update:
On Tuesday, August 13, 2024, command of the incident will transition to a local Type 3 Incident Management Team, led by Incident Commander Brad Milam. This change ensures the continued effective management of firefighting operations and ongoing support for the community.
Despite challenging red flag conditions yesterday, firefighters made significant progress, achieving 8% containment. Aerial retardant drops were successfully deployed to bolster ground operations. Today, two helicopters will be available to further support these efforts. Additionally, dozer lines have been constructed, and removal of vegetation from nearby housing developments has helped slow the fire's spread.
Overnight, crews successfully held and secured fire lines, working through winds of 3-7 MPH, with gusts reaching up to 12 MPH. Using over 3,500 feet of hose, firefighters will continue to secure the perimeter and conduct mop-up operations. Today's forecast predicts temperatures ranging from 75-85°F, with winds shifting from 4-8 MPH upslope to 9-16 MPH from the west, with gusts potentially reaching 30 MPH.
