Identifying grasses. Letโs set ourselves a bit more of a challenge. This diminutive plant is just 1cm tall and 4cm across, growing on a trampled gravel path in Silwood this afternoon. We want to know the genus.

@MarikoWhyte @DorsetWildlife I have been collecting varieties of local grass here in ลile ฤฐstanbul Turkey (Black Sea coast) so it's wonderful to compare. Are they similar to the types you have in Dorset?
My aim is to assist grow lacking local awareness on the importance of biodiversity.

Grass #5 is another Hairgrass, this time Early Hairgrass (Aira praecox) with a short and narrow inflorescence of shining spikelets with fine scruffy awns #grassID
Grass #4 is Squirrel-tail Fescue (Vulpia bromoides) with long whippy awns on a one-sided inflorescence of narrow spikelets #grassID
Grass #3 is my all-time fave Silver Hairgrass (Aira caryophyllea) a short grass with fine leaves which wither away quickly and a beautiful, spreading, silvery inflorescence #grassID
Grass #2 is Heath-grass (Danthonia decumbens) with broad blue-green leaves, hairy sheaths and big, round, clumpy florets. It's one of few grasses with a hairy ligule (the bit where the leaf meets the stem) #grassID

Hairy Wood Rush (Luzula pilosa)
Wood Sedge (C. sylvatica)
Pendulous Sedge (Carex pendula)

Genera of Poaceae: Molinia. This is one of the last of the really important grasses to come into flower. It dominates huge areas of wet heath in the uplands, it's abundant in fens, and forms the understory of wet Betula pubescens woodland in the lowlands.
