Whitewashing #HateViolence against Tutsi by LUCHA and the silent complicity of MONUSCO
◾️Lieutenant Gisore Kabongo Patrick, on November 9, was stoned and burned alive for his Tutsi facies by a crowd of Congolese civilians, calling him "Rwandan", in broad daylight in the city of Goma, in eastern DRC. In an act of #cannibalism, the man's flesh was consumed by the assailants. GoDRC spokesperson @PatrickMuyaya in a statement issued today, called "for an investigation", while a plethora of video evidence posted on social media shows the hate crime being committed.
◾️More than 48 hours later, the UN peacekeeping mission @MONUSCO, led by Special Representative @UN_BintouKeita, hasn't yet issued a statement. One can only interpret this silence of MONUSCO as a form of continued complicity with the systemic Tutsiphobia in DRC, which is the root cause of instability and insecurity in the Great Lakes region.
◾️ Congolese civil society group @luchaRDC led by senior researcher at @nyuniversity @fredbauma90 engage in an act of hate speech and Tutsiphobia, mocking the memory of the family of the murdered soldier, by calling the hate crime an "isolated case" which they claim "the enemy", (i.e., the 'Tutsi', the 'Rwandan'), "uses to justify its media manipulation". This is despite evidence that this hate crime is one of a series of hate crimes that have taken place in DRC in the past two years, and beyond, in the past three decades, owing to the ideological hate contamination by the genocidal force #FDLR, through all layers of the Congolese society.
◾️Anti-Tutsi hate speech in DRC has been denounced by the UN Office on Genocide Prevention 12 months ago in a statement delivered on 30 November 2022, highlighting "indicators and triggers ... present in DRC... a violence which is a warning sign of societal fragility and proof of the enduring presence of the conditions that allowed large-scale hatred and violence to erupt into a genocide in the past". Hate speech in DRC was equally denounced by former High Commissioner Michele Bachelet, the UN Security Council member states, the Group of Experts on DRC, human rights lawyers, genocide prevention scholars and activists, etc.
◾️The numerous documented hate crimes against the Tutsi minority in DRC have been committed in full impunity despite multiple warnings issued by members of the international community. Unless GoDRC is collectively held accountable for these hate crimes and the widespread hate speech against the Tutsi, hate violence will perpetuate itself in the region and this minority group will continue to be targeted in DRC and around the world.
