I come from a generational farming family.
My father was the first to step out of that path - he moved into government service, and after taking voluntary retirement in his late forties, built a full time business in a niche service sector.
Now, I find myself standing at a similar crossroads.
I’ve completed ~ seven years in government service.
Don’t have any form of debt, hardly any expenses of my own (wife working in pvt sector , a kid in nursery) , and I benefit from a joint family setup that shares most household responsibilities / expenses.
Thanks to the Covid rally, my portfolio corpus today is worth much more than the total salary I’ve earned in these seven years - which gives me a unique kind of confidence and headroom.
Till about 2023, I had always thought what I’m asking today wasn’t even possible - because I didn’t really know much about the investment world.
I’m the first in my family to ever own shares in the market, so there was no mentor or reference point.
But over time, I learned, made mistakes, and slowly built conviction and could takek Timely Diversification call.
Earlier, my PF was 100% in equities, but I gradually pivoted it to about 60-70% equity and the rest into gold, silver, and Bitcoin - with gold forming the major chunk.
Despite this shift towards balance, I’ve managed to maintain similar growth, which now makes me believe that maybe I can actually take this leap.
That’s where the question really comes from -
Should I now pivot like my father once did?
Leave the job and focus completely on the family business, while actively managing my investments?
The business itself is stable, though not high-growth - it has its limits, but it gives me TIME that my job doesn’t.
On the other hand, it's a government Group A job, which offers a sense of certainty,good salary structure, and comfort that’s hard to undervalue esp in " Current Economic scenario. "
Btw , I also have an option that complicates things - a ‘leave without pay’ from department, which would let me test this path without closing the door behind me.
It feels like a safe middle path , but also like postponing an inevitable decision. (As I don't perticularly love my Job..I mean it's ok..I can do it till retirement but dealing with public , Journalists, courts etc etc is quite exacerbating to be honest..health n family life is severely severely affected)
So , The question I keep circling back to is simple but heavy -
Do I take a leap or NOT ?!
I’ve seen my father make that switch once and create a meaningful second innings, but every generation’s reality is different.
So I’m putting this out here - for perspective.
For those who’ve stood at similar crossroads -
how did you decide when to stop playing safe and when to finally bet on yourself?
