Reliable response to me replying "#humanpeacocking" to a tweet is I get blocked, DMed hate mail, and occasionally have the user make a post that I'm ___ist or bullying them (these are all bigger accounts).
People rage against implication that their behaviour has signaling implications.
We readily acknowledge status signaling (intentional or not) in others but vehemently deny that we ourselves do anything like this.
When I talk about my research to others, first response is "oh yes I see that all the time", immediately & unsolicitedly followed by "but I don't do that."
