5/7/26 #Cumbria - The Dark Red Helleborines (Epipactis atrorubens) of #HuttonRoof aren't always "Dark Red". This striking example is var. albiflora, a particularly rare find with almost pure-white flowers. A great sight for guests on tour with @Mariposa_Nature #wildflowerhour

3/7/26 #Cumbria - Phwoar! The Dark Red #Helleborines (Epipactis atrorubens) are peaking on the Limestone pavements above Morecambe Bay, in all different colours! Tomorrow I take Arnside & District NHS out near Kendal and on Sunday it’s a trip up #HuttonRoof for @Mariposa_Nature
17/8/25 Cumbria - I’ve often thought that #HuttonRoof should have better displays of #waxcaps and #fungi than I’ve historically encountered; today I found a nice pair of Fibrous Waxcaps (Hygrocybe intermedia) but there’s not a huge amount of exciting things on show right now
27/7/25 Cumbria - Some years, #HuttonRoof treats us to a very interesting #orchid. It's clearly from the Epipactis phyllanthes group but quite unlike anything else I've seen in the UK. It most closely matches the description of a Scandinavian taxon, var. confusa #wildflowerhour
26/7/25 Cumbria - The last of the Broad-Leaved Helleborine #orchids (Epipactis helleborine) are flowering, with the majority of them now over. Up on #HuttonRoof, there is plenty of variety to be seen - even on plants a few yards from each other #wildflowerhour

6/7/25 Cumbria - It's a privilege to lead a tour up on #HuttonRoof for @Mariposa_Nature and I usually kick off with Yellow Birds Nest (Monotropa hypopitys), a seriously rare plant up here. This species lacks chlorophyll, instead gaining its nutrients from fungi #wildflowerhour

It's probably the Pendulous Flowered Helleborine (Epipactis phyllanthes) that pops up from time to time on the limestone pavements of #HuttonRoof
It's very similar to a taxon from Scandinavia that goes by the name of "var confusa" but this plant is in my opinion something different and probably a separate variant worthy of recognition
7/7/24 - A second day leading for @Mariposa_Nature here in South Cumbria but this time on #HuttonRoof, with botanical treasures hiding in plain sight on the vast landscape. Yellow Birdsnest, variants and hybrids of Dark Red Helleborine and a Holly Fern among the highlights.

28/8/23 Cumbria - I've not come across any #Gentians on #HuttonRoof so far this year, but was able to find this single yet lovely northern form of Autumn #Gentian (Gentianella amarella ssp septentrionalis) after continuing my walk further up to Farleton Knott #wildflowerhour
@dunnjons @DFoyLiv @chrishindle @Matt_J_ecology @Haggewoods @botany_beck So’s this beauty Jon, despite being blind this year - a different species (Epipactis helleborine) in a different site (about four minutes’ drive from my house). Unfortunately the variegated plant on #HuttonRoof is a no-show this year - it’s been bad for them with the drought.
@thenewgalaxy @BryanYorke @BSBIbotany @dunnjons Bryan became an immediate friend when he dropped everything to meet us on #HuttonRoof in 2021, so much so we haven't been able to bring ourselves to re-visit since😢, just wouldn't be the same. Maybe next year 🙏
It’s been lonely visiting #HuttonRoof recently, and I think of @BryanYorke every time. It’s because of Bryan that I ever went in the first place - and great to see that he’s been recognised for his contributions to botany by @BSBIbotany following his nomination by @dunnjons
3/7/23 Cumbria - I finally managed to motivate myself to go up #HuttonRoof for the Dark Red Helleborines (Epipactis atrorubens) and left reasonably satisfied. Many exposed plants have aborted or been nipped by the hares but there were a few lovely examples on show #wildflowerhour
24/5/23 Cumbria - Male and Female forms of Mountain Everlasting (Antennaria dioica) growing side by side on #HuttonRoof. This charming #alpine species is vulnerable in England, and rare across most of the country - its strongholds being upland areas in the North #wildflowerhour
24/5/23 Cumbria - Jemima found a large patch of leaves up on #HuttonRoof in the New Year that she proudly identified as Mountain Everlasting (Antennaria dioica). We revisited the spot today and were left absolutely gobsmacked by what we found! #wildflowerhour

31/8/22 Cumbria - I’m frustrated and disappointed to report that the site of the “Westmorlandii” plants (Epipactis phyllanthes) up on #HuttonRoof has been damaged by some appalling fieldcraft and several plants have suddenly disappeared, presumably collected 1/3 #wildflowerhour
