When the State Reaches for the Children

Today I read a letter that shook me.
Not a political analysis. Not a report from the front. Not a statistic.
A letter from Veronika. Seventeen years old, in 11th grade, from a small town in Russia.
She describes how the war has gradually entered her school. Into the lessons. Into the language of her teachers. Into the thoughts of her classmates. And now, even into herself.
While reading it, I kept thinking about a question that is also asked repeatedly in Germany:
What happens to a society when an authoritarian, radically nationalist system eventually determines what children learn at school about war, the motherland, heroes and enemies?
Veronika's letter provides a disturbing answer.
She writes about teachers whom she once respected for their knowledge and humanity. Today, those same teachers call Russian soldiers "heroes and defenders" and teach children the state narrative about the war.
Particularly disturbing is her description of a history lesson on the anniversary of Beslan, where Islamist terrorists took more than 1,000 people hostage in a school in 2004 and more than 330 people were killed, including at least 180 children.
On that very day, she says, her history teacher allegedly claimed that Ukrainians were terrorists just like the perpetrators of Beslan.
She also says the teacher claimed that Ukrainians had organized the Crocus City Hall attack, the 2024 Islamist terrorist attack for which ISIS-K claimed responsibility and which U.S. intelligence also attributed to ISIS-K. No Ukrainian involvement has been publicly substantiated.
And she even says the teacher blamed the "Winter Cherry" disaster on Ukraine.
The "Winter Cherry" was a shopping centre in Kemerovo where 60 people died in a devastating fire in 2018. Investigators found serious safety violations: blocked emergency exits, a defective alarm system and people trapped inside. It was a fire disaster, not a Ukrainian terrorist attack.
But the sentence that stayed with me came from Veronika herself:
"If I was able to recognize this lie, could the children in fifth grade recognize it too?"
That is what is truly frightening.
Because she also talks about second-graders.
About young children who, during school competitions, name their teams "Star of Russia" and "Russian Guard." Children for whom conversations about the war have already become part of everyday life.
She describes classmates joking about going to war after school, and then suddenly becoming serious when asked about it: If necessary, they would go.
As if there were no other possibility.
She describes camouflage nets being made for the army and fundraising drives.
And then comes a passage I had to read twice.
Veronika was supposed to go as a volunteer to what was supposedly an ordinary technical summer camp organized by her school. Only when filling out the paperwork did she learn the name of the programme:
"Drones Pilot β Profession of the Future."
A summer camp for teenagers.
Drone pilot. Profession of the future.
College indoctrination led to an angry liberal feminist identity. Learning about systemic oppression felt like superior knowledge, presented as fact, with no room for differing educated viewpoints. #Feminism #Indoctrination #College
