An article about #ants, which like to #carry #large #loads, but which can also carry #mites with them, the latter than not so voluntarily. But one can even not generalize about the eagerness of #workers to #work, because #antworkers are #individualists. Shown here: #Formica cf. #rufibarbis (Formicinae) with a #Carabidae (Coleoptera) beetle #larva as living #prey in #Berlin, July 2023. It is often claimed in popular media that ants can carry unusually large loads. However, this is exaggerated and the result of mathematical miscalculations. Also, it depends on whether #moving (living) or #immovable loads are being carried. The most important #food source for Formica ants is honeydew, followed by #liveprey and carrion. The individual of the species F. cf. rufibarbis shown in the #photo carries a living and very #defensive carabid larva, observed by me on July 6, 2023 on a dry meadow in the #urban #park Rehberge, Berlin. In terms of size and defensiveness, this prey was visibly in the range of the maximum possible that an ant worker of that size is able to achieve. I #observed the animal over a longer distance and noticed that this worker was subjected to a real ordeal. Again and again the larva made writhing and wriggling movements and tried to reach the enemy with its well-defensive mouthparts. Again and again the larva successfully freed itself and the ant grabbed again and again. The ant did not seem to tire of this struggle. The ant with the large larva caught my eye because none of its fellows in the immediate vicinity intended to bring comparably bulky and wriggling chunks of food into the nest. And this is no coincidence, for there are always ##industrious and less industrious individuals in ant nests. The image of robot-like individual animals that only complete a fixed program has long been outdated. According to A.P. Modlmeier et al. (Proceedings of the Royal Society B, 2012) is a particularly high #diversity of different ant #personalities associated with a particularly #successful #colony that produces more offspring. However, ants cannot always choose what they also carry around with their bodies, in addition to parasites, these are much more often #phoretic nematodes and #mites. Because they don't want to harm the ants, the latter rely on the workers to #transport them there, usually to certain places in the ant nest, where the mites can #develop further. Mites are particularly common, in addition to Uropodida and Gamasina (Parasitiformes), representatives of the Trombidiformes (Acariformes), these are mainly the distribution stages (#deutonymphs) of the #Astigmata (#Acariformes) representatives. The mite fauna in ant nests is still poorly studied. Incorrect determinations by non-specialists are not uncommon. #Cryptic species groups within the Astigmata are often not resolved. According to Scheucher (1957), Formica fusca, which is closely related to F. rufibarbis, has the mite #Histiostoma #myrmicarum, which she described herself. According to Türk & Türk, the mite #Forcellinia #wasmanni Moniez, 1892 (Acaridae) lives on F. rufa, F. pratensis and F. sanguinea. Both mite species mentioned here are also named for numerous other ant species from different taxa. It still has to be checked whether it is in fact always the same mite species. It can at least be assumed that very close relatives of the two mentioned Astigmata mite species live on Formica rufibarbis. More research is needed here, and even more so to understand the biology of mites. In 2015 I #biologically studied the mite Forcellinia wasmanni in a nest of #Myrmica #rudinodis (from the German island Usedom) and showed that mite deutonymphs wait for ant #pupae in order to be able to climb them when they hatch.
