Hav Bahadur led his company in a fierce fight against LTTE militants, neutralised 2 before making the supreme sacrifice #OnThisDay 21 June in 1989 in Sri Lanka. #IPKF
Hav Thapa, a section commander of 7 Platoon Charlie Company, 1/1 Gorkha Rifles, was in ambush in area Kontakkaran Kulam, Sri Lanka on the night of the 20 June 1989.
At about 0530 hours on the 21 June 1989, he observed the movement of 15-20 militants west of his location. He immediately informed his platoon commander Subedar Shiv Darshan Singh Gurung, who in turn alerted his entire platoon. Due to the rattling of a Light Machine Gun while being adjusted, the militants got suspicious, and started firing indiscriminately.
Company Commander Major S K Mehta reached there and assessing the situation, he with Platoon Commander, Hav Bhim Bahadur Thapa and Rifleman Ganga Bahadur Ghale moved to a flank and launched assault on the militants.
Hav Thapa got a burst of bullets in the chest, and started bleeding profusely, but he continued fighting the militants and killed two of them. He displayed a high sense of responsibility and valour in combat, and died at his post fighting.
The #IndianBrave was awarded Vir Chakra posthumously.🏵

L/Nk Thapa was a member of a patrol party during Op Pawan in Sri Lanka. He volunteered to be the scout of the patrol party thereby putting himself right in front. While patrolling along Rasa Veethi on the 19 June 1989, he spotted three young men crossing a fence in a suspicious manner. He started chasing the men to apprehend them. On being spotted, the suspected militants ran in different directions, jumping over the fence.
Determined to get the militants, L/Nk Thapa followed one of them in hot pursuit. Realising that he was being pursued very closely, the militant tried to evade capture by lobbing a grenade that exploded in front of L/Nk Thapa.
Undaunted by the explosion of the grenade, the continued to chase the militant, who was now joined by another militant. The militants opened up with AK-47 rifles and brought a heavy volume of automatic fire on him. Undeterred by the fire, L/Nk Thapa returned the fire with his rifle and killed one militant instantly.
Subsequently, the search on the dead militant resulted in the recovery of two cyanide capsules, two micro cassettes containing incriminating material, and cash in Sri Lankan currency.
However, in the exchange of fire, L/Nk Thapa was seriously injured and he succumbed to his injuries.
L/Nk Thapa, thus displayed conspicuous courage, bravery and valour in the face of the militants in total disregard of his personal safety and made the supreme sacrifice.
Long gone, but not forgotten
#LestWeForgetIndia🇮🇳 Major Surinder Singh, Vir Chakra (P), 16 RAJ RIF, made the supreme sacrifice, chasing and neutralising militants in Sri Lanka, as part of #IPKF #OpPawan, #OnThisDay 05 June in 1989.
Maj Singh was tasked to approach a suspected militant hideout in an area east of Puttar in Sri Lanka. He located and identified the hideout. Thereafter, he decided to raid it.
On 5 June 1989, Maj Singh organised his patrol of 15 men and went on the raid, during which he shot two militants.
The patrol observed two militants fleeing the hut. The officer, without worrying about his safety, decided to chase the fleeing militants. In the hut were the two militants earlier shot by him.
As he ran past the hut, one militant opened fire at point-blank range on Maj Singh and injured him seriously. Despite the injury to his chest, the Brave turned round, shot dead the injured militant, and continued chasing the militants till he collapsed.
He refused to be attended to and directed his personnel to pursue the militants. Eventually, one of the fleeing militants was shot dead. Soon after the operation, the officer was evacuated to a field hospital, where he was declared dead.
Maj Singh was conferred with a posthumous Vir Chakra.

Hav Thakur was a Squad commander of Bravo Team 9 Para Commando. He had participated in almost all special missions launched by the unit since October, 1987 in Sri Lanka.
On 12 April 1989, he and his Squad accompanying a platoon of 12 JAT, had an encounter with a group of approximately 20 to 25 militants.
In the Initial phases of the encounter, his squad members were wounded and their vehicle came to a dead stop. Hav Thakur stood his ground amongst the wounded and brought down effective fire on the militants from the Light Machine Gun mounted on the vehicle.
The militants attempted several times to rush to the vehicle. Hav Thakur along with Captain Sanjay Kumar Thapa, successfully foiled all such attempts. Four to five militants were killed and 7 militants injured.
Hav Thakur having exhausted his Light Machine Gun ammunition, grabbed a weapon from one of his wounded squad members jumped out of the vehicle and charged at a militant who was trying to remove the weapons from the wounded.
In this process, Hav Thakur was fatally wounded and made the supreme sacrifice.
Havaldar Jash Thakur displayed conspicuous courage and valour in the face of the militants. The #IndianBrave was awarded the Vir Chakra (Posthumous).

Nk Singh laid down his life during a search and destroy mission of an LTTE hideout #OnThisDay 08 April in 1989 in Sri Lanka as part of the #IPKF during #OpPawan
Based on information from a captured hardcore militant, a raid was launched to eliminate a group of 10 armed militants. Naik Singh was a member of the specially selected raid team. When the raid group reached a house, it came under intense automatic fire. The fire was immediately returned.
When it was realised that the militants were trying to flee to the north, the group was divided into two sub-teams. Naik Singh noticed two militants bringing down effective fire on the number one sub-team, thereby, slowing their advance. Seeing that time was running out and that the militants were getting away. He charged from behind the cover and, while on the move, fired and killed one militant. After killing the militant, he chased and wounded another militant who, however, managed to escape.
As Naik Singh dashed beyond the cover, he received a bullet in the chest from a third militant and was severely injured. He was evacuated to Kayts Civil Hospital, where he succumbed to his injury.
Naik Ranjeet Singh displayed boldness, exemplary courage, and initiative in action against the militants and was awarded the Vir Chakra posthumously.

General Sundarji was the last Indian Army Chief who truly had the ear of the national leadership.Not a man who asked for permission to do his job , he shaped strategy and expected the system to keep up.
From the Sumdorong Chu standoff to IPKF operations in Sri Lanka and Exercise Brasstacks, his tenure was defined by bold decisions and strategic clarity. There was never a dull moment under his watch.
He authored Combat Papers I & II, pushed the mechanisation of infantry, and redefined how India thought about armoured warfare. Much of the Army’s modern doctrinal foundation traces back to his vision.
Soon after Pokhran-II in May 1998, Dr. Raja Ramanna visited a critically ill Sundarji at R&R Hospital, Delhi. Though unable to speak, the General instantly recognised him.
With a firm handshake and a vigorous thumbs-up, Sundarji conveyed what words could not.
In that silent moment lay the fulfillment of their shared dream , India finally standing as a nuclear weapons state.
Since his passing, the @adgpi leadership has gradually lost much of that aura. From being at the core of national strategic decision making, it has slowly drifted toward the outer echelons.
Sundarji represented a generation of soldier statesmen ; intellectually formidable, politically confident, and operationally fearless.
