In 1997, #JohnWimber wrote an excellent article on evaluating the 5-Fold Ministry emphasis amongst some Charismatic & Pentecostal Christians, much of which falls into todays NAR (New Apostolic Reformation) grid.
Wimber wrote:
If "fruit that will last" (John l5:16) and "equipped to serve" (Eph. 4:12) are the goals, then how should we weigh expectations?
Here are some suggested questions to ask for each of
the five functions.
Apostolic function - How many disciples and churches are there as a fruit of your ministry?
Prophetic function - Do the prophetic words benefit others? How many believers are equipped to prophesy?
Evangelistic function - How many have been won and brought into the life of the church? How many evangelists have been trained and released?
Pastoral function - How many people have been equipped for life and ministry? How many are able to help others in the same way?
Teaching function - How biblically accurate, personally helpful, and culturally current is the teaching? How
many teachers have been equipped and released?

Wimber's article, "The Five-Fold Ministry," was essentially a way of clarifying where he (and the Vineyard) differed with folks advocating for the necessity of certain "apostolic" and "prophetic" emphasis in order to experience revival (very similar to the "Culture of Honor" ideas promoted by Danny Silk).
I think it's important to point out that Wimber did NOT reject the continuation of the five-fold ministry FUNCTIONS. He simply rejected or wanted to correct the commonly held ASSUMPTIONS by many of the advocates for what has come to be NAR in it's various forms.
For me, his article is a love letter to the Vineyard and has helped me think reflectively on why I find so much of the modern charismatic church's focus to be slightly off and he was well ahead of the curve, IMO.
You should definitely track down a copy and read it.
The healthiest and most helpful resource for people who are Charismatic but reject the theological nonsense of #IHOPKC “prophetic history” and NAR “honor culture” ecclesial nonsense would do well to dive into the contributions of #JohnWimber.
He was faithful to his wife. Didn’t sexually or spiritually abuse people. Gave away more than he ever received. Built a movement on an “everyone gets to play” approach to ministry. Matured into an “already/not yet” understanding of the kingdom. Matured past all of the prophetic manipulative drama of NAR before it was NAR. He had a theology of failure in contrast to those who only have a theology of victory.
Numerous people share stories about how generous he was, how he sought to release and empower (sometimes to a fault), and he was a spiritual father and friend to soooooo many.
I really think Wimber will help you.
Many people don’t know, but I had a stint in IHOP and was at many conferences for about three years, including their Passion for Jesus, eschatology ones, and One Thing. After I was on staff at another IHOP and had spent a lot of time reading and attending IHOPKC events, I RAN back to Wimber and the early Vineyard values espoused by he and Don Williams and many others. I RAN back to my Vineyard roots, having grown up in the Vineyard.
I know I say it a lot… but I just can’t recommend him enough. Wimber wasn’t Jesus… and he wasn’t perfect… but the nonsense, abuse, and manipulation that passes for a lot of the charismatic world needs to be filtered through the theology and praxis of that good ‘ole fat man just trying to get to heaven…
His teachings helped prepare my seminary and grad school education. His practical theology helped me see the bankruptcy of IHOP, #AlanScott, #JeremyRiddle, and a host of other NAR types.
More Wimber, MUCH more Jesus, and more Kingdom theology… we need those in the charismatic church.
