In the early 6th century, general Belisarius, often cited as the last great Roman general, embarked on a campaign to reconquer much of the Western Roman Empire.
After securing North Africa, his eyes turned to the Italian peninsula and the long-lost heartland of the Empire: Rome.
Armed with only 7,800 men, Belisarius was sent to defeat the Gothic Kingdom, a powerful state capable of fielding tens of thousands. Through ingenuity and shrewd use of local support, he managed to take both Naples and Rome with minimal casualties.
Today we look at how the last great Roman general took half of Italy with few men and wavering support from Constantinople.

Justinian the Great (c. 482 - 565 AD), Emperor of the Byzantine or Eastern Roman Empire, flanked by members of his retinue. Detail of a 6th century AD Byzantine mosaic in the apse of the Basilica di San Vitale at Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Mosaics on either side of the basilica’s apse celebrate the earthly domain of Justinian and his wife, Empress Theodora (c. 497 - 548 AD). The mosaics were created in the 500s AD, a few years after Ravenna was captured by the Byzantine Empire from the Ostrogoths.
