For a long time, I thought growth meant becoming the person I was supposed to be. The responsible one. The successful one. The version of me that other people could finally look at and say, “See? Now you’re doing life right.” But somewhere along the way, I realized I was trying to build myself out of other people’s expectations. And you can spend your entire life doing that. You can keep changing yourself to earn approval. Keep explaining yourself so people understand. Keep shrinking certain parts of yourself because they make someone else uncomfortable. Keep chasing a finish line that moves every time you get close. Eventually, I had to ask myself a different question: Who do I actually choose to be? Not who does my family think I should be. Not who does society reward me for being. Not who would make everyone else comfortable. Who am I when I stop asking permission? That question has changed so much for me. Because I've realized that becoming yourself sometimes means disappointing people who were attached to an older version of you. Sometimes people will misunderstand your growth because it doesn't fit the story they've already written about you. That's okay. They are allowed to have their opinion of me. And I'm allowed to stop living inside of it. I don't need everyone to approve of the person I'm becoming. I just need to be able to look at the way I'm living, the way I'm treating people, the choices I'm making, and know: This is me. I chose this. And for the first time in a very long time, the person I'm becoming actually fits.
